My dog just recently ate some rat posion a few days ago, i took them to the vet and everything, but now they are not playing any more and just lying around the house. This happened Monday, was your dog okay after a few days or so? I'm really worried about my dogs. Has any one's dog got into some rat posion and was okay after they went to the vet and everything. My dogs are labs, normally wild and playful, now they just lay around the house and sleep. will they be okay after a few weeks. The VET says that it can go either way. Has any one's dog done the same thing and lived okay? I'm sorry I'm so worried and scared, if any one is as much as a dog lover as me, knows what I'm going threw... really worried ....

I really hope your dog is okay. I just don't understand how you could have rat poison lying around that they could get into. Please take them to another vet.

How soon after they ate the rat poison did you get them to the vet, and what treatment was provided? Usually the problem with rodenticide is that is uses the body's store of vitamin k, and then they can't clot their blood. So a couple days after they ingest it, it can cause anything from minor bruising to bleeding internally.
A quick way to see if your dogs look as if they are losing blood internally is to look at their gum color. It should be a bright bubble gum pink. If you have a chocolate lab, it may be more mauve color, just due to natural pigment. Look at the color inside in artificial lighting, because the natural light can make them seem paler.
Also look for any bruises and if you see any, recheck right away with your vet.
If their color is good, and they are acting fine other than sleepy, they may just be tired. But if you are worried, have them checked. Rat poison is toxic and can be fatal.

Rat poison uses anti-coagulants, blood thinners, which prevent clotting and in excess cause internal bleeding which results in death from blood loss. The same thing can happen to your dog. The difference is the size of the body. You dog got through the initial stage which says the body size worked to your dog's advantage. Vitamin K was a good treatment since it upped the clotting factor of the blood which counteracts the blood thinner effects. The good news is that since your dog survived long enough for the vet to administer treatment, it is likely the dog will survive. There is no certainty here since these chemicals are long acting and can still have an effect long after ingestion in spite of treatment. Poisons are never a good thing and you are having to rely on the body chemistry and the speed at which things work, so nothing is certain. However, that said, if your dog is still alive a day later with treatment, it is likely it will survive. I just can not place a percentage on the rate of survival.

It depends on how much the dog ate in relation to its size. Rat poison works by making the rat hemmorhage. Treatment is usually vitamin K. I have attached a site that explains the effects of rat poison in cats and dogs and the steps a veterinarian usually takes. It sounds as if your vet did nothing. I would take the dogs to another vet as there are treatment options that are discussed on the site.

I am sorry about your dogs, and although I have never been in this situation I want to pose a question, if you ate poison would you be running around? Your dogs are sick and it will need to pass. If they begin to start sparking up then you will be able to see if they will get better. Just spend as much time with them now. Don't expect the worse until it is time. Just know that they probably feel terrible right now. I hope everything works out.

Hey you e-mailed me
Answer:
Our dogs had consumed alot of rat poison and ended up going to the
nearest University vet school for treatment which included intravenous
infusion of frozen plasma and Vitamin K to counteract the warfarin in the
rat poison (warfarin is an anticoagulant commonly used in humans). If
they were not treated, we were told they would die. Everything turned
out fine.

Your dogs could just be resting while their bodies are fighting off the poison, like a sick person gets tired till they are better.
Just check in with a vet via phone every couple of days untill all is well. If theyget worse bring them in immediately.
