If you're in the movies and/or media, of course you're going to want to display the most elegant and good-looking martial arts out there. Effectiveness plays a backseat role... if it even plays a role at all. Why do you think in summer blockbuster kung fu epics, Discovery Channel documentaries, and Olympic competitions, only the best-looking and flashiest moves make it to the screen for the viewers to see? Beautiful kicks, fanciful forms, and good-looking fight choreography make up the majority of what we're exposed to when we see martial arts through the media's eyes.

So yeah, when you look at it from a pop culture perspective, elegance is given more importance.

It depends on the teacher. Theoretically, it seems that martial arts without any effectiveness is not much more than dance or yoga, and without elegance it is just barbaric. A good teacher will have both effectiveness and elegance.

After WWII, returning G.I.'s brought martial arts back to America. The oriental style was elegant, but required years to perfect. Bigger Americans developed their own versions, most notably kickboxing, which utilized strength and american style boxing as well as oriental kicks and blocks. So, it depends on which style you prefer. Most martial arts today emphasize discipline, flexability, balance, and a healthy lifestyle over the ability to kick the crap out of somebody.

effectiveness is seldom elegant, and elegance is seldom effective.

go for what works and then make it look pretty later if you can.

Effectiveness - the pretty high kicks and spinning attacks will land you on the floor pretty damn quick.

Martial arts were designed to defend yourself so if it doesn't defend you, it is pretty useless how ever nice it looks.

Why don't you do some research on military? Do they do all stupid running and spinning crap while beating their opponent in middle of fire fight on a minefield? Or do they keep it simple and brutal?

Look up history of CQC (Close Quarter combat) or Rex Applegate.

It depends. If you're trying to pass to the next belt, or showing off then elegance.

If you're defending yourself... well come on! Wanna be full of style or saving yourself?
