Plant parts that we eat that start out as flowers are fruits (nuts start out as a different sort of bloom).

If you use the root, stem, leaves, etc. is is a vegetable. An often misused term.

If it can reproduce its a fruit. Basically if it has seeds. All fruits come from flowering plants. Vegetables come from leafy plants and are the edible part of that plant. Like onions are the bulbs of an onion plant and carrots are roots. Peas and corn are actually fruits

I believe it's also something to do with the seeds of each. I believe that's why a tomato is technically considered a fruit rather than a vegatable. I know there are a few things that differ one from the other but I'm nearly positive that something about the seeds is one of them. I wish I knew exactly what that was, but I don't.

Fruits typically grow only on trees (like apples) or vines (like tomatoes.) They have seeds inside the, er, fruit of the plant. Veggies typically grow in or on the ground. Veggies have seeds too, but their seeds usually come in the flowers or stems, rather than the "meat" of the plant that we eat.

almost all fruits grow on either trees or shrubs (grapes are one exception--they grow on vines). no fruits grow underground--many vegetables do. fruits generally are sweet while vegetables generally are starchy. fruits are almost exclusively cooked or served with sugar, while vegetables are almost exclusively cooked or served with salt. tomatos are an exception and can be served with either sugar or salt--and there is still an ongoing debate as to wether they are fruit or veggie.
