Richard Dawkins: He is Blaise Pascal without religion. He's a genius on many topics, he writes brilliantly, and he can communicate ideas to even the most closed-minded religious people without enraging them.

Jonathan Miller: He's probably more reponsible for understanding the human mind than anyone. And he's a heck of an comedic actor for a serious doctor.

Isaav Asimov: I didn't like his fiction (read "I, Robot", don't see that stupid movie) but his non-fiction books were written in brillian layman's language.

Carl Sagan: A gentle intellectual giant. He popularized science more in the US than the 1980 US gold medal popularized hockey. He put ideas into public discussion that were never thought about by most people. And he was involved in at least half of NASA projects in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

Matthew Sweet and Matt Johnson. Since I hit 21, Sweet is the only musician who's among my favourite 5-10 performers. Listen to the album "Girlfriend"; all the songs involving religion *sound* pro-religious, but read the lyrics carefully. That's subtlety and good songwriting. And Johnson? A 17 year old who self-produced one of the greatest rock albums ever.

Noam Chomsky: If the reich wing would put aside their fascist fantasies for a moment, they would realize that Chomsky probably is the most important person ever in the field of linguistics. And when you add in his political views, his clarity in speaking the truth, you see why the reich whingers are so afraid of him.

The Nerds who changed the world: Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Richard Stallman, Linus Torvalds, Scott McNealy, and Larry Ellison (but NOT Gates and Allen, bastards that they are).

admire would not be the word I would use. To admire I would have to feel inspired by them and I don't. As for celebs I am almost never impressed with this. I have seen some atheist on this forum that I could say I like and see some of their points. I deal with that which is in my grasp and world. Celebs are not.

A lot of people who claim to believe in God are secretly atheists. You can't include those in your list. It would be an interesting list if we could know who all actually disbeleive in God.
