Hi, as a Catholic I will try to be some help to you on this matter, the fact that Jesus told the story of the wicked servant, who threatened those under him for not paying their debt to him and he showed them no mercy, while he himself was first absolved from the debt he owed to his master, and Jesus said of such a person that he will be thrown into prison and will not be released untill he repaid every last penny.
now as Jesus never spoke without telling a truthful fact then He could not have been speaking of Hell as no-one gets released from here, and so He must have been alluding to a place of penitential activity.
the Catholic church has always taught that when we sin there are two effects, firstly we offend God and secondly we stain the soul with the mark of the sin,and as we cannot enter into the presence of an all pure God then we have to be purged of this staining , and that place called Purgatory is Gods merciful way of allowing us to repay every penny so that at last we may enter into His awesome holiness and purity.
in another sense it is a fact that oil and water cannot mix together and niether can the soul that carries the stain of sin be one with God untill it has been purified.
I hope this has been some help to you,Iam not a Theologian so I have tried my unworthy best for you.
yours in the Lord.

Purgatory was a pagan belief that was later adopted by the Catholic Church. It was declared an article of faith at the Council of Florence in 1439 and later confirmed by the Council of Trent in 1548. I believe this was a doctrine the Catholic Church used to extort money from the gullible. Individuals whose loved ones were in this fictitious place would gladly pay someone with the power to get them into heaven. The concept is no where in the Bible because it is not a scriptural doctrine; it was a Pagan concept long before the church decided to accept it.

This may hurt! But the word purgatory's origin in the Catholic Church was somewhere between 1175 - 1225 and was from a much older form of religion - the pagan religions of Rome herself. This is where we get such things as Sunday worship, christmas, lent, good friday, palm sunday, etc. as well as all of the other 'religious' holidays (holy days), and as God has made Holy but one day and that day is the seventh day Sabbath, then that would make all other days unholy days or Pagan in origin.
I am sorry if I have hurt your feelings.

Purgatory comes from the latin "Purgare" which means "to clean" or "to purify." This was a belief created by Catholic theologians and made official church doctrine at the Council of Florence.

The Romans 'corrected' a lot of the bible, collated the new testament from things they liked and left out the things they didn't. King James had it re-translated as he didn't like some of the wording and more recently the watchtower have re-translated it to suit their own slant. It's all a matter of getting right to suit your target audience.

Your catholic church invented it (as stated above:Vatican) and it was another tool they used to create control. it meant that they had power over the outcome and this caused more followers to obey them as you could be prayed for once you die, and the prayers of the living could effectively give you a get out of hell free card.
just a control tool, that made sure your family continued to support the church once you died. money is power baby, money is god.

Ask your friends…
“Where did the words ‘sola scriptura’ come from, they’re not in the bible.
and
“Where did the words ‘Only the sixty-six books of the Protestant bible are the infallible word of God’ come from, they’re not in the bible.”

From the word "purge", because it is a place where people are "purged" of their sins.
