My phone stopped working about a week ago. It can't be the phone, because I just bought it, and when I pick up the phone the line sounds like dead air, instead of a dial tone. I've checked our box outside and messed with what I could with the wiring. We've had it happen before and it has been fixed, but this time it doesn't want to work. But my internet is still working, why? Especially since it is on the same phone line. I need any help, or any suggestions that I could test to make it work. I've already called the Bellsouth repair line, and they said it wasn't the Bellsouth service, so it has something to do with my line in the house.

Great answers so far, but I still want to know why my internet is working and not my phone, if they're on the same line.

First, if you have another phone in the house that works unplug it and plug it in at the wall plug where this bad phone is. If it works, then your new bought phone is indeed bad in some way or another - take it back. If it doesn't work, then there is a broke wire in the house wiring somewhere, either the line is bad from the phone to the wall or the line is bad in the wall at the box or anywhere from there to the main phone box on the side of the house.

get a phone from your neighbor and try it in your house.
If it works, it's your phone.

plug a working phone in the grey box outside your house. if it works, the problem is in your wiring and is your responsibility, not the phone company.
otherwise, the problem is with bellsouth and they should fix it on their side.
instead of plugging a real phone, you can get a phone line tester at home dempot for $5. the light turns green if it's good, red if reversed and does not light if the line is dead.

Have you tried checking if it is plugged into the land line socket? If It is maybe the battery is dead or a wire got disconnected inside the phone to get it repaired.

Test your phone jack. Sometimes, this has happened to me before, but anyway, sometimes it is the phone cord. So try getting a new phone cord and then if this does not work then contact your provider and get them to come out and take a look at it. A new phone cord should work.
