ive heard that blood is blue when its inside your body but when it is exposed to oxygen, then it is red. does this mean that blood in veins is blue and blood in arteries is red? when you bleed, it is always red because its exposed to oxygen? why does it turn blue when there is no oxygen in it? why do veins appear blue when looking through your skin?

Have you ever donated blood or seen blood being donated? The bag (about a pint) has a dark, dark red look to it. The 'blue' blood you are talking about is a very dark color, usually found in the veins.

A good way to look at blood: When you take a deep breath, the oxygen moves across the smallest tissues of the lungs into branches filled with blood that returns to the heart. This blood that now has oxygen in it is then pumped by the heart to the rest of the body through arteries. The oxygen in the blood gives the appearance of a lighter red. The blood goes to all the tissues in your body. The tissues remove the oxygen from the blood.

Now the blood (without oxygen) must go back to the heart and lungs to repeat the process. The blood goes back to the heart by veins. This blood has no oxygen in it and has a much darker appearance to it.

I have heard that blood starts off blue then when it hits oxygen it turns red. It doesn't turn blue thats what color it is when it is produce. On the other hand how would someone know that. Don't you think that the blood the scientist would see would always be red. I mean how would they be able to see blue blood without exposing it oxygen. I have no evidence to support this it's just my opinion.

Blood is always red. It looks blue in the veins close to your skin but that's just an optical illusion.

Veinous blood is dark red..
Arterial blood is brighter red..
There is no blue blood..
It is simply the skin distorting the color...
