WWII began with the invasion of Poland on 1st September 1939. Germany was given an ultimatum to quit Poland at 11am that morning when the news reached the British and French governments, and as no such undertaking was pursued by the Germans Britain and France declared war on Germany at 11am on Sunday the 3rd. Until May 1940 no combat, apart from brief skirmishes, took place in the west, and then the Germans unleashed the Blitzkrieg which saw them roll over France in six weeks and by August all of Western Europe apart from Great Britain, Ireland, Spain and Portugal was under direct or indirect control. Italy entered the war in June 1940 as allies of the Germans.
Both the United States and Japan entered the war on December 7th 1941 although Japan made no formal declaration but instead launched a surprise attack on Pearl Harbour. Thereafter they rampaged through British, French and Dutch possesions of empire and ruled over large parts of China.
The war in Europe formally ceased on 8th May 1945 with the surrender at Luneburg Heath by the Germans. Italy had surrendered in 1944. In the Pacific the Japanese surrendered on August 15th after the first and only atomic weapons to be used in warfare so far were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

Essentially the seeds of World War 2 were sewn at the end of World War I with the Treaty of Versais. Because of how the French are they took more and more from the Germans in War Repatriations.
Through all of the actions through the 20's in Germany and the liberal thoughts of pacifism of the 30's culminating with the expansion of Facisim unchecked through the pacifist leaders in Europe.
In each continent various agressions occured that could be the starts - Manchuria, Annexing of Sudetenland and Abyssinia, but as seen, it is Sept 1939 that Britain and France (snigger) declared war on Germany for the invasion of Poland.

Depends what you mean by start - Britain declared war on Germany 3rd September 1939 - I know because my dad was RAFVR and my parents got married 5th September 1939 when he knew he would be called up. However causes of war were earlier - invasion of Sudetenland, invasion of Poland. By the way I was born Sept 2nd 1945 - day Japan signed surrender and ended WW2 - so I think I have it beginning to end!

If your primary language is English, go with the posters who claim 1 Sep 39. If you speak Mandarin, you might want to back up a few years. Or you could take one of the modern schools of thought and consider that WW I was so expensive and the Armistice so one-sided that there was only one world war, with the major military flare-ups occuring 1914-18 and 1939-45.

3rd September 1939. The Germans invaded Poland on the 1st, and the British government demanded a German undertaking to withdraw. When it was not forthcoming, war was declared.
Unless you're American, in which case it was 7th December 1941, the date of the attack on Pearl Harbour.

Depends on your view point. We Brits consider it mostly as September 1939 when King George declared war on Germany in response to our treaty with Poland, following the German invasion. If you were Spanish however you may see it as 1936 when the Germans helped Franco to win the civil war. If you are Chinese you may think of it as 1934 when I believe Japan invaded Manchuria or if American in 1941 after the attack on pearl harbour.
