I have two Golden Retrievers. They are very spoiled including dat they can run around outside free ( with no leash) and so we always leave them out alone for like fifteen minutes.. but lately they have been wandering around alot to where we can't see them. We always are out there for 15 minutes to even a half and hour, calling to them. How do we get them to stop wandering so far away? if u r gunna say a shock collar ( which we have been thinking about) can u help us find a site that tells about it and tell us were to get it? Thank you.. and Happy Thanksgiving!

I agree with most of the other posters. You may think it's kinder to let your dogs have the run of the land, but it's not. Spaying and neutering would most definitely help if they're not already. Shock collars are cruel, and would be worse to your dogs than erecting a fence. You need to put in hours and hours of training if you're going to let them wander. Either that, or start taking them for leashed walks everyday for at least a couple hours.

First of all, you could fence off a small area of your property to keep them confined. That way you always know where they are.
Second, if you get them spayed and neutered they will be less likely to roam, as they will not be influenced by hormones and being in heat, looking for mates.
Shock collars are not the answer...They are the lazy way out and most people do not know how to correctly use one.
Even if you have so many acres, you need to keep them on leash or confined to a certain area by fence to keep them safe...You never know if there are strays, rabid animals, or nasty items around that they could get into and get sick/killed by.
I know none of these reasons are what you want...you seem to be looking for the easiest, quickest fix.
Go to http://www.friendsofanimals.org and get them altered with a cheap certificate that you can use at your local vet office.
Keep your dogs safe. If you can't keep them confined in an area where you can supervise, keep them on leash.

Good luck!

I'm gonna go with the masses here ...
DO NOT tie your dog up- it's cruel, and will surely make your dog lonely, depressed, and in GREAT DANGER; they can run away, get hit by a car, get poisoned, get KILLED or BEATEN.
DO NOT use a shock collar- it is also cruel and causes SEVERE damage to the dog. It will learn to associate new people with the pain of the shock collar, which will cause aggression.
DO spay/neuter- It will stop them from feeling the urge to wander away and mate.
DO keep them on a leash when you take them outside.
DO be outside with them- Whether going out to potty, or play, or whatever the case may be, your animals are always safest under your supervision.
DO take them to obedience classes- This will help form a strong bond between you and them, and will help teach them that you are the Alpha, and they will respect and honor you, and listen to you.

Your dogs should never be loose, outside if not in an enclosed area or under your constant supervision. They could get hit by a car or hurt and not be able to return home for help. They could get stolen, they could get lost (yes it happens). They could be picked up by animal control, because it is against the law to have your dogs off leash, except in a specified area. If you live in a rural situation, the dogs could be hurt by wild animals or dog haters.
You need to train your dogs to return at your command and they shouldn't be loose at all, until you have perfected that. There are lots of resources out there for training "come." Take an obedience class if you are too lazy to do the research.
I personally don't believe in shock collars. It's better to take the time and train properly with positive reinforcement, then to take the lazy way out and resort to negative reinforcement.

Spaying and neutering are actually good suggestions. A lot of males that roam are responding to females in heat and a lot of females that roam are looking for boyfriends.
Shock collars might work on some dogs, but on others, they're a waste of money.
If your dogs aren't listening to you when you call them, try to make it a more positive experience for them when they do finally come. Give them LOTS of attention and tell them what good dogs they are. A few treats won't hurt, either. If they sense you are upset, they may not want to come when called. Dogs are like kids, you have to make things fun for them to keep them motivated.

Your dogs should not be allowed to wander freely, you are imposing on other people's freedoms by allowing your dogs to be a menace.
You need to train your dogs, and you need to have your dogs on a lead everytime they are let out. You are going to find yourselves with lawsuits and fines if you continue to let your dogs roam the neighborhood.
Be a responsible owner - leash and train. It's not the dogs fault there are no boundaries. That's YOUR job.
p.s. to ADD to your addition -- are you telling me your dog knows where your property lines are? I don't care if you have 1 acre of 20, if you are not in control of your dogs, that's YOUR issue and has nothing to do with the dogs. PEOPLE PROBLEM, not dog problem.
The more you type, the more I realize you should not have animals at all. THEY won't like a fence or YOU won't like a fence? You're a very irresponsible owner to allow your dogs to wander free when you can hear gunshots. I fear for your dogs because you cannot be trained.
Sorry you can't handle the truth, but to have your dogs roaming freely, to have animals that do not respond when you call, for you to exhibit such a lacidazical attitude about training your animals shows that you are not qualified to be a proper owner. Do you think if you expressed your feelings a reputable breeder would allow you to adopt one of their dogs? I don't think so.
I've not insulted you by calling you any names nor have I violated any of Yahoo's rules by responding to your question. You don't like what you've read, too bad. Don't ask strangers for help if you're not willing to listen. Nearly every poster has offered you suggestions to your issue. If you just want to keep doing what you're doing, you shouldn't have asked for input.
http://www.leerburg.com will help you learn how to be a responsible owner.

ok. so.
if you have that many acres you should know that they are safe.
if you have a fence there is n o doubt that they are safe.
you odn't need a shock collar. that tortures them and in the future your dogs won't even want to go outside because they will be afraid that they will be shocked.
they will wander off every once in a while
if you are so worried about it you should keep them on an extremely long leash.

Try a fence. In almost every community it is against the law to let your dogs run loose.

A LEASH? A FENCE?
Responsible owners contain their animals. I HATE it when strange dogs charge us when we are out walking! You have NO IDEA if my dogs are friendly! I carry pepper spray and WILL use it on dogs if they will not back off!
Citiy or country, it doesn't matter. MANAGE YOUR ANIMALS!!!
Letting them roam does not equal love. They could get hit by a car or get in a fight which could result in them having to be euthanized. Keeping them safe, THAT is love.
