I'm not quite keen on small arms but this is what I know between these two guns:

The AK and the M16 are a product of different philosophies and needs the USA and USSR were going through. The USSR was constantly in combat in 300 meters, and thus needed faster weapons. And because of the fact that it was a large-conscript based Soviet army, they needed guns that were cheap, reliable, and easy to use. The AK is known to work perfectly even under the dirtiest conditions the gun has gone through.

On the other hand, the US army preferred Lighter weight, accuracy and ergonomics. Thus came the accurate, semi-auto M16.

the ak47 has a larger round (7.62mm/.308cal)which provides more stopping power, velocity, and distance and cost a little more, but it is heavier which means you will carry less rounds then the m16 (5.56mm/.22cal) The AK is "more dependable in inclement weather ops." you can fill it with sand and mud and it will still fire. It does require less maintenance then the M16. I don't know about the M16 but my M4 ( shorter barrel and colapsable butstock) has been burried in sand and dirt and was still able to fire on semi-auto but not 3 round burst. If the enemy uses an AK, and we use the m16, we will have to wear heavier body armor then them. I have fired the multiple weapons in the AK family and I would rather take an M4 over an AK because it is smaller, lighter, and I can carry more rounds. I believe it dosent matter what size bullet you carry so long as you put it in the correct spot.

Well, the M-16 is light because it is made of a polymer plastic. The ammo is 5.56 mm (.223 caliber) and muzzle velocity is about 2300-2600 fps as I recall. It's a very light and powerful round. Some drawbacks are that, once the weapon gets dirty, it can easily jam. However, I am most familiar with the M-16A1 I used in the 70's. From what I understand, this problem was corrected for the most part in the M-16-A2 and A3 models.

The AK-47 is made of wood, so it is considerably heavier. The ammo is 7.62 mm (approx .308 caliber) so it is a very powerful round. I'm not too sure of the muzzle velocity. One thing unique about Soviet-era weapons - the tolerances between the moving parts are a lot more liberal, which allows for ease in cleaning and maintains a very high rate of reliability. Another advantage is that you can often buy military surplus ammo which is usually a lot cheaper than regular ammo.

I guess your choice will be determined my your personal prefrence and what exactly do you expect the weapon to do. After all, they can all be fatal in the wrong hands.

In reality the AK-47 is the worlds deadliest "weapon of mass destruction". With the fall of the USSR vast quantities were sold to every insurgent group in the world. There is no doubt that in the last 20+ years the AK-47 has killed more people than all other weapons combined.
As for which is better the AK-47 or the M-16 ????? all depends.
Every weapon is a compromise one way or another. The M-16 was designed to have less recoil enabling easier target acquisition. The AK-47 is designed to shoot a heavier projectile giving more knock down power. Neither weapon is perfect, and both work.

I've been to iraq and seen the comparison on both weapons very much. Example:

My unit took an M16 and dropped it in water...didnt fire, rolled it in mud....didnt fire, has smaller rounds and fires less rounds at a time(single or 3 round burst), and the parts have to be cleaned alot, as is all weapons.

The AK47...we dropped it in water...fired good, rolled it in mud...fired fine, dumped sand all over it, fired fine. The good thing about this weapon is that it fires on auto, has a larger round and is very reliable, thats why the rest of the world uses it. It lasts longer also. I personally would chose the AK, but the M16 has more modifications that can be put on it like a flashlight, scope, bipod, and new handgrips. Hope this helps, have a good day.

AK 47 is the wost widely distributed automatic in the world. It is over-engineered to the point where you can dig holes with it, fill it with sand, carry it under water, and it still works fine. A little heavier than M16, I find that the wooden hardware becomes slippery when firing full auto, and you have to be careful that you dont catch a finger in the action because you hand is slipping. You can find ammo for AK 47 everywhere, no so with M16. So depending upon your application, AK 47 is the better equipment, and you can pick one up for next to nothing.

A ballistics comparison is useless to you. I can tell from the way
you word the question.

The M-16 A2 is the better choice. But unless you know someone on
a street corner who is selling them you can't get them.

You might find an AR-16 but that would be an A1 with auto semi-
auto function fixed so it only fires semi auto.

What ever you are thinking about doing, dont do it. You'll die.

I'm no gun freak or nothing but it seems to me that Americans use the m16, and the rest of the world uses the AK47 so that should tell u something

Give the AK-47 serious consideration for its toughness, its ability to function while dirty and dusty and its (well-planned) ability to use standard NATO 7.62 mm rounds. A nice piece of engineering.
