they really are the same thing... valuim lasts alot longer, so it might accumulate in your body .... and depending on the reason your taking it, this might be good or bad.

they both work fast... so the only difference is that valium lasts like 4 times longer.. this may or may not be a good thing.. you may be able to take a smaller dose of valuim and be pretty much constantly at a certain level of calmness...

it does however depend on your goal... if you plan to not be taking it all the time and only when you get a panic attack, then xanax is more appropriate.. if you plan to take it all the time to prevent panic attacks, or general anxiety, then valium is more appropriate.

whereas with xanax you would need to take multiple doses a day and be going up and down all the time.

personally, i think valium is a much better feeling.

the side effects of both are the same... mainly forgetfullness, and being a tad intoxicated... any difference in side effects you might feel would be simply due to the doses of each not being equivilent

they are both safe... and both can be addictive... some research has shown that shorter acting compounds are more addictive... so that would be xanax... but like i said, they do exactly the same thing as each other.
