one cup = 8 oz. liquid measure
dry measure is not the same, some items are heavier than others, and you must use a scale if the equivilant is not given to you on the package. Or...ask here with the specific item that you are measuring...ie. dried mushrooms, 8 oz would be a lot more than a cup, broken hard candies, it would be less.
But..a LIQUID measure is 8oz = 1 cup
