My Father has always wanted to take my mother to see them so I wonder whats the closest place to Toronto that you can see them. A friend of my father told him that you can see them from Sudbary. Is this True? Please Help. I'd like for my fathers wish to come true.

The closest place is actually just north of Toronto, away from street light glow. I live about 30 miles north of the lakeshore and if there's been decent solar flare activity during the day, I have no problems looking northward and watching the lights on average of 3 or 4 times a winter. If Toronto wasn't so well lit at night, you could see them from there.
Here's a site for what you can expect to see in Toronto. Norhern lights are at the bottom of the page.

To increase your chances of watching them, subscribe to just about any astronomical website and keep a watch on their solar activity reports. The more active the sun is, the better chance at that evening having a northern light show.

Northern Lights In Toronto

Perhaps you might suggest that your folks hold out for this: http://www.cbc.ca/technology/story/2006/10/27/lights-northern.html

The money they save by viewing the lights on a computer, could be used toward a trip to another destination. I've often seen the northern lights through an airplane window.

Hope that helps!

I have seen them just outside of Ottawa, in the Gatineau Hills. Hills and lights are both breathtaking.

Baffin Island is a good spot. Not too far from Toronto either.
