I sort of started on both at the same time.I had a CD of words and such, but I also started memorizing the letters too.I know some words, and I like to practice by reading different things I find like food boxes,TV shows and such. It's a very lovely language in writtien form.I am enjoying learning it.
Everyone is different.Listen to the native speaker's answers.I just started off on my own.Start with sounds of letters, then go to numbers, then words.

I would suggest getting at least the Arabic alphabet down pat first, especially if you've never been introduced to Arabic before and especially especially if you''re going to be learning standardized Arabic.
Reason being is simple. There are many sounds that don't exist in the English language that are used frequently in Arabic. Getting the alphabet will be an easy way to learn the subtle difference between the two different t's, s's, h's, etc... and be able to establish a sound base for when you start learning the language. Plus, you're bound to pick up a few words learning the alphabet.

Absolutely NOT!
You certainly don't need to. Get some language tapes like pimsler or rosetta stone and hang out with some local arabs.
