I got a box of stuff from an auction and in it was a small box of personal badges and religious charms from someone who sereved in the army. I have his name and social. I wanted to find a way to find him or his family without paying a fortune so they could have the stuff back.

We are unsure if he was enlisted recently or if it was years ago. He might be old or dead or he could be young.

From the sounds of it he server in WWII, Korea or Viet Nam, Send a letter to the social security office explain the situation and ask them to inform the person or any living relative to contact you so you can return the medals.

Couldn't you go to a library and look him up??
If you go to a large well established library normally the staff would be or is possibly educated in this department.

Since he was in the army shouldn't his name be listed some where?
