1.6million people in Ireland have fluency in Irish, however only 350,000 use it day-to-day. This is increasing and Irish is being made an official EU language, so if the government make a proper effort with the aid of the social partners we should be able to get that 1.6million people speaking it every day.
As for if i know any of them, yes I do. My mother and her family are fluent in Irish though dont use it much anymore. I am living in Galway on the west coast at the moment and I hear Irish spoken a good bit.
Irish is getting a massive revival with a national tv station TG4 as well as an explosion of Gaelscoileanna(primary schools taught completely in Irish)

There are different numbers, the one I heard most recently was ca 20 000.
I know more than I can count because I live in the Gaeltacht area of North West Donegal, where Irish is the commonly used language, and everybody is a native speaker, apart from the blow-ins like myself, and most tourists.

The population of ireland is approx 6 million. Gaelic is spoken mainly on the west coast. It is there first language there. Other parts of the country speak english. Dont know any though, all my family live in the east.

There are more in America than there are in Ireland. It's sad....it's a dying language. No, I don't know any in Ireland, but I know several here in the states (my family).
