I know English is not the official language or maybe someone can prove me wrong. Wasn't our Constitution written in English and other important documents? I am asking this question because of everything that is sold in stores which has English instructions and Spanish instructions. It also bothers me when I go to a store and the cashier speaks to me in Spanish and does not speak English. What gives? I am pro LEGAL immigration and anti ILLEGAL immigration. Say no to amnesty and deport all the illegal INFIDELS!

Sorry if I offend anyone, it’s a touchy issue.

I had a debate on this same subject recently. English is not the same as the language that was origonally from england. Its a language of so many mixed cultures and otgher languages. We spanish, latin, greek, french and so many other roots. English is a common source of communication. If people emigrate into this country and want to be successful they should take it into their own hands to learn the language. Language barriers only cause trouble. Not to say that immigrants should be looked upon badly if they speak their own language, because that's what makes this country so diverse and amazing, but in order to be diverse and strong and successful there must be a common ground. Our language is that ground. This is why we take foriegn languages throughout our schooling, it's to help communicate with those who cannot yet communicate with the majority of our society. English is a very common language. If you go to france, you are bound to find someone who can help and assist you. If yopu go to greece, or mexico there too speaking only english can you find help. So yes, English should be the offical language of the US because it gives us a advantage on the rest of the world.

In any other country that an American visits we are often catered too by english speakers because it makes sense to accomadate tourist. However step away from the tourist venues and Americans are often expected to communicate in that countries language with people who are native to the country. Should an American complain or suggest that the natives of the country speak english this person(s) would be scoffed at and considered pretty much an idiot to suggest for instance french people should speak english for thier benifit. Its just foolish. So to cater to tourist that visit America it makes sense for us to have multiple language skills in various business enviroments to make our visitors welcome. But when the tourist steps outside the tourist venue then english should be the language they are confronted with and should figure out a way to cope with it. Get a translator or dictionary or whatever. Too suggest that the English speaking nation should speak the visitors language as a native tongue..Thats just plain stupid. We are an english speaking nation founded on the english language and this should be and IS our nations language whether its acknowleged legally or not. English IS the official language of the United States simply. Learning more than one language is terrific and expands your intelligence and insight into the world. It should be something we choose to do as an individual decision.

When you come here legally you learn English and assimilate into society .
So if you don't or won't learn our language , then you don't want to become a productive American Citizen .
Why are you here ?
Yes , English is our language , we can and maybe should learn other languages also , to speak to tourists or when we travel to other country's .
If you are an American you speak and read English .
Our Immigrant grandparents did .

the united states has no authentic language on the federal element, yet English is the de facto nationwide language. this signifies that English is the most spoken and established language interior the U. S., yet there is not any authentic language. I undergo in concepts listening to about a regulation they were attempting to bypass making English the authentic language, yet i wager it failed.

Yes, I think if you are dealing with the Government you should have to do it in English. If a private company wants to have interpreters that is their business. But paying taxes and getting a drivers license, or voting should require that you speak English.
Also any welfare programs should require that you speak English as well. We hire special Social Workers to speak to the Illegals and these Social Workers are not even qualified for their jobs.

That would take a constitutional amendment. Each state has the right to choose it's own language and some (like Florida) actually HAVE chosen. Florida has declared both English and Spanish to be the languages of the state. Louisiana has declared English and French. Most states have made no such declaration. I agree with you, however, and encourage you to send a POM (personal opinion message) to your state congressmen.

No your right and I do believe it is the official language, unfortuneatly the greed of chasing the almighty dollar is why you see instructions in various languages because its cheaper than to print out instructions in just one language at a time, now do i think all signs (businesses) should be in english, yes,do i think its rude to accomodate other languages yes,to a point(you go to any other country and if you cant speak their language, what do you think they do?But its different here,I cant understand why?
