Why do some english people say they cant understand the scottish accent?

Hi! I was in Scotland last summer and I understood they perfectly; if their neighbours don't understand they is because they don't want. I'm looking for the day that i become to Scotland...what a wonderful place with his lovely people. I love it!!

Because they have a really crap ear. I've lived in Oz, New Zealand, England and the US and the only time I have ever had any problems getting understood by people with english as a first language is the english.

I was working in a job in NZ where most of my time was spent on the phone. I got on fine, understood by all apart from one idiot woman from London who couldn't understand me and complained to my manager for employing someone like me in a telephone job. Manager told her to bugger off! Quite right too.

I think the south of England is just bloody lazy!!

It's all about perception and the willingness to try and understand. Saying that though, some Scotts do speak very fast with a very broad accent. I expect there are lots of people who can't understand some people from Birmingham because of the broad accent. So don't get too paranoid about the English, at least the Scotts have their own gas and oil field.

If they have a really strong accent it is very hard to understand, I have a Scottish mate who most of the time I can understand fine but when he starts a conversation with his mum (they are both Glaswegian) I can hardly understand a word, it's really strange but great to listen to.

Probably because they can't - all accents take some getting used to, and the more different the accent is from what people are used to, the longer it takes for them to be able to tune in to it. It all depends on what you are used to hearing.

But for people to make sweeping statements such as 'I can't understand the scottish accent' is ridiculous, because the accent varies so much; from very strong in some areas, to quite light in others.

ITS Because the Scottish accent is too thick...

e.g. :they say for "hello”.....Heellooo... extending the words & speaking the old style Scottish English,,, makes it hard for English or any other person to understand,,, by the way these days in Edinburgh(Scotland’s capital) U will see a lot of teenagers speaking modern English...

cos some of the language is different from town to town, city to city.ive lived in aberdeen for 17 years but have trouble understanding somone from fraserburgh.the dialect is very broad in scotland.

Remember a program some years back with a character called Rab C Nesbit? O.K. I am sure the inpenatrable accent was part of the joke, but I had to put the subtitles on to have a clue what was going on.

the english cant even understand themselves for god sake!!!in a recent poll it confirmed that the scottish accent is the most trusted in all the brittish isles!!!scottish people are the salt of the earth!an im saying that being irish!!!
