I practice by myself, solo. I have to be sure all my post-op patients are OK before I can go out of town for a few days. I have not had more than five consecutive days off since 1980 with the exception of back surgery when I was in the hospital for six days; the next day I had to go in, on a walker, and see an emergency patient
All this being said, it is not hard work, not like pulling green chain or a lathe operator. I, personally, never get tired of the work, every day is different and challenging. I cannot wait go get up in the morning and see patients. I cannot believe that I get paid to do this.
There are state and federal problems, Medicare and Medicaid, private insurance, paperwork that takes up most of my Sundays.
The hospitals can be a pain in the *** due to passing the buck when problems arise; committee meetings that seem to last forever.
I have five kids and none want to be a doctor. Because I make a good living, they never went without and were spoiled into not having the same work ethic that I do.
OK, it is challenging and not for everyone. I make a lot of money and have a beautiful home and expensive cars. I do not have the amount of time to enjoy the STUFF; but the work, and the satisfaction of helping is reward enough.
This above all: being a doctor is not a job or even a profession, but it is a calling like a priest.
Answering this question I get to do on Thanksgiving...no patients today.
I really hope that this answers your questiion.
