2 years ago at Christmas time, my pal found a wallet at an empty table in a near empty pub, with £500 cash in it.
He was tempted to keep it, but with it being Christmas.. thinking it could be someones wages, he tracked down the owner from the info in the wallet.
Guy shows up in a new BMW, takes wallet, thanks my pal, then left. No reward or anything.
On the otherside though, my Dad lost his wallet in an airport... £1000 cash in it in $ and £. A group of nuns had found it and were handing it in at the same time my Dad was behind them in lost & found, and ofc he gave them a huge thank you and £ donation.

Thirty years ago, maybe, but not now (again, maybe)...as various banks and a certain building society over the past 25 years have ripped me off good stylee - suspect I'm also owned at least £500 in old Poll Tax/Tax returns. Of course it is said that the older you get, the more mature and understanding you are. That could be so, but perhaps a grand (or even a 'monkey' - £500 to those well away from the noose known to one and all as the M25) maybe a 'guiltless' reward for alleged 'hardships' of the past...of course, there's always the fear that the money was for a wee bairn who has suffered from an illness etc; so I guess I would think about the amount for more than a few minutes before giving it in.
But to the police?
And let's face it - if you lost money...from something small from £10 to a large amount. Would you see it again?

There is an offence called THEFT BY FINDING" It is reasonable to say that either someone has dropped this money or it has been stolen. If the notes are marked in anyway and can be traced, if you use them there will be a way to find out where and when it was spent and then CCTV will pick you up. You may be looking at yourself on CrimeWatch one day for the original offence, which whos knows, may have been an armed robbery.
The correct way to do this is to hand it in to the police BUT when you do sign to say that if the owner in not found then the money legally comes back to you.

My integrity is worth a lot more than £1000. I would turn in the money to the police.

Depends, was it in a wallet? in a bank deposit bag?
At my police service citizens who find money and turn it in can apply to claim the money after a certain period of time and most often the applications are granted.
What if it was your 1000 and you needed it to pay your rent?

In a wallet with id ,yes.Loose cash,no.I would inform the police that I have found some money, and leave a phone number for anybody to contact me.I wouldn't tell cops where I found the money incase they are crooked and send a friend to claim. If nobody calls you, spend it.

I would notify the police, without telling them how much I had found--the same way I would with anyone else. If anyone came forward, they would have to tell me how much they had lost. Hopefully, there would be no lucky guesses!

yes, I found a wallet two weeks ago and I could tell there was money in it for I seen a $10 bill sticking out. I opened it to a nice baby picture and pulled out his visa card and got his name. I went to city hall, this is a very small town., and they knew who it was and returned it to him. he found me later and shake my hand and we chatted. the good feeling I got was worth any amount of money that I could have stole from him. turned out he worked second shift and stopped to help someone who's car had broken down. he did not even know it was missing until the city person visited him.

I would make them a copy of every note and give them 30 days to find the owner.
