First of all it is illegal to kill woodpeckers, they are protected under federal law. At this time of the year the likely cause are insects... you should inspect the area the woodpecker has been going at to see if there is any insect dammage if so treat the infestation accordingly. To prevent further immediate dammage by the woodpecker try placing some plastic /screening over the affected area, sometimes placing aluminum plates and other noisy objetcs may help, tough this is not the most aesthetic look.

Woodpeckers peck to get a food - bugs. Have your house inspected for termites and ants. Instead of wanting to kill it, you should thank it. It may well have alerted you to a serious problem and in his own way he is doing his part, although futile in effort, in helping you fix it.

you guys are incorrect. There's plenty of bugs in the surrounding trees. When they hit the house and make those perfectly round baseball sized holes, they're looking for a place to nest. There's something about that particular wall or perch that they like.. They'll make a baseball sized hole but inside the wall, they'll tear out several feet of insulation and even open up the inside wall as well.

There are life size replicas of birds of prey. The most common is an owl. The woodpeckers are fooled into thinking it's real and leave.
Get them at Walmart and the internet.

They use those to save birds from sitting up on the poles and pooping on vehicles. A staple gun is the purely element else you want. prices hardly something.

Break down the house and find another house and the woodpecker will start pecking in a tree or a cactus. And then he will not remeber you if he finds you in about a couple of years or he will never find you ever ever ever ever again.

We used cherry netting and that cement siding. Places where we couldn't hang the netting we used small pieces of the siding to put up where the woodpeckers to begin. Then took it down when they went away.

Like the other two folks said; If the bird is going after your house it is sensing the presence of insects in the wood! Get rid of the bugs and the bird will leave your house alone!!
