Forced to? If seeking British citizenship, or permanent residency, then it would be sensible to make having a reasonable degree of fluency compulsory. If they are temporarily resident and have no intention of making this permanent, then I don't really see the long-term value.
But the responsibility should lie with the government to provide free appropriate language courses for those who wish to comply.
As someone who studied another language (French) at university (and German at A-Level), I am in favour of being able to communicate. Doesn't mean that everyone will find it easy, but proper immersion into a culture and society should facilitate the learning process.

English must be learnt.
Not just by the residents of the UK, But all citizens of the world as it is the international language of communication. You are at an advantage if you learn English.
There are more advantages and no disadvantages.
I do nt see any problem for anyone which prevents them from learning especially in the UK.
English is my third language, not my mother tongue and I encourage everyone to learn English.

I live in Canada and have the belief that one official language is very
useful.Unfortunately,my government caved to the minority and made french an official language along side of english. To make matters worse, we also let people from every country in the world into Canada.Millions of tax dollars go to pay for interpreters for people brought before court, tax audits, immigration hearings and other services. Therefore, yes I think everyone in the U.K. should speak english.

NO. There are two official languages in UK the oldest of which is Welsh, dating from the 6th century. The second most important language and most widely spoken is English. A person can legally be heard in an English court in the Welsh language. If you visit any UK Gov website, you will be offered a choice of either English or Welsh. I oppose.

Hello,
I wouldn't say all UK Residents should be forced to learn English. In England if they want to get a prosperos job in today's world, they would have to learn English and also pass with the qualifications.

I dont think you should make it compulsory, but i do think you should give all the encouragement you can,and provide the facilities for them to do it.
I now live in Spain, and my village with assistance from the Valencian authorities, actively encourage foreign residents to learn the language,by providing Spanish lessons free of charge, and i think anyone that does not take advantage of the help, should not be in that country.

You can't force people to learn a new language though can you?! Even if you made people go on language courses there is no guarantee that they will learn. Not all people are able to pick up a new language as easily as others.

No-one should be forced to learn any language. However, it would be sensible for people to speak the language of the country they live in. Now I'm not saying that everyone should try to learn a language because they live in the country, particularly if you live in a welsh vilage were everyone speaks welsh, but it would be intelligent to lern to speak with people around you.
