There are NUMEROUS verses in the bible condemning the use of statues, idols & graven images. An example:
(Exodus 34 13-14)
13- But ye shall destroy their altars, break their images, and cut down their groves:
14- For thou shalt worship no other god: for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God.
The above verses also point out that ther is only ONE God, so worshiping Jesus isn't a good idea when it says God is a "Jealous God"
Bowing down to statues is exactly what the people of old did. Having statues of Jesus, Mary, & saints & bowing to them is exactly what it says in teh bible NOT to do.

An idol is something that is worshipped. God said not to put anything before Him. Anything keeping you from worshipping God is an idol. Your TV could be an idol, your computer....ANYTHING that keeps you away from God! If a cross or picture of Jesus was worshipped....to answer your question, yes, then it would be an idol.

Sure, we have crosses up or pictures of Jesus, but we are not worshipping the cross or the picture, we are just using them as a means to visualize and understand the sacrifice that Christ made for us when He died on the cross. An idol is anything that you worship instead of God.. it doesn't just mean a statue, it could be money, friends... anything that you have placed at a higher level of importance that God in your life.

Go to Exodus 20:4,5. It clearly states that making idols and idol worship is wrong. It's part of the 10 commandments. And, yes, the cross is an idol and that scripture clealry shows how God views idols.

I like Celia's answer about their use of crosses and pictures of Jesus being used to visualize their god, because that is the EXACT SAME WAY a pagan uses an idol, nobody is stupid enough to worship a hunk of metal or stone,it is a TOOL.

I tried using a dot on the wall, but could not focus as well as using an idol. So I went back to my rosary.
Idols are focusing devices - hopefully. As all the Saints are not GOD, and would explain this to you if they were alive.
Humans need tools to focus and that's what religious people have provide through the eons.
Words or images to help people connect to GOD.

Statues, crosses, pictures, etc. are idols. People that use them as a visual aid are bowing down to them.
