I recommend a trainer that will show YOU how to train your dog. I see too many people making huge mistakes in their training that they overlook, then when their dog gets older, they are faced with many problems!

The main job of a professional trainer is to teach YOU how to train your dog.
Teaching a dog something, and then expecting it to remember it for the rest of it's life simply isn't going to happen. It is only through you using what the trainer taught the dog that the dog remembers. So from the professionals point of view,, which is more important,, teaching the dog, or teaching you how to use what the dog was taught??

That depends on the size of your wallet, and what it is you want to train!

Many people benefit greatly from basic obedience classes which are readily available and usually very reasonable. Basic obedience will cover the basics, sit, stay, come, wait, lay down, etc.

However, if you are on a budget, there are many, many books and resources on the net on dog training, from the basics to the most advanced.

If you don't have alot of time take a class! If you need to save $$$, pick up a book at the local used bookstore, library or online.

If you are having major issues with your pup, such as aggression, then I would reccommend you find a behaviourist, rather then try and combat these problems yourself.

You never want anyone else to train your dog. If you don't know how to train a dog, you need to find obedience classes where the trainers use methods you agree with and go to them. The trainers teach you how to train your dog - you work with your dog, they just give you the knowledge you need to teach your dog. Your dog also gets the much-needed socialization with other dogs.

It is better if you train it yourself for two reasons 1) It's cheaper and 2) The dog will respond to you when you tell it what to do because you taught it to do that.

Go to a real trainer NOT one at a retail chain store. You get what you pay for.

I think training classes are the best because they not only work on obedience commands but work on socialization with other dogs and with people. These training classes will teach you how to work with your dog.

You could buy a DVD from a professional trainer and then do it yourself.
