There was never really a "debate" and is wasn't among "the church." Rather medieval theologians are claimed to have pondered the question, which is more aptly stated as "how many angels can dance on the point of a needle." However, there has been no source text found among the writings of medieval theologians from Abelard to Aquinas confirming this old tale. The first reference to it was from the 17th century. It may very well be an old wives tale.

The number of angels you are believing in, up to an infinite number of angels, do dance on the head of any pin you are considering. Then when you think about something else, they go away.
Isn't the question just a koan? (a paradoxical question that's supposed to stimulate you to think intuitively rather than logically) Your answer is as good as anyone's.

Seventeen angels could dance on the head of the pin that they were using in their experiment. It was a very big pin though.

None, they'd just go to a night club if they wanted to dance.
