All of the above. A dog's tail has a full range of motion depending what he wants to communicate.

Tail wagging is expressly for communication, it is said that if a dog is alone, it doesn't wag it's tail at all!

Side to side means the dog is happy, as in a greeting. It can also signal aggression when accompanied with other postures.

When a dog is in a pack of dogs, if he puts his tail straight up, this is a signal of dominance.

I'm not sure what circles mean, but I think it's another variation of the side to side wag.

my dog normally wags his tail from side to side, but there is the occasion up and down motion thrown in every now and then.

dog's tails usually wag side to side ,but it really depends on what kind of dog you get like my german sheperd wags his tail side to side ,but my best friend's basset hound wags her tail in circles and up and down .

almost always side to side but sometimes in circular motians depending on the dog and how excited they are.
