I have a cake recipe that would require me to cream my butter and sugar. I don't have a machine that could whip it for me, so how would I do cream it by hand? Do you think a blender could work?

What I do is let the butter soften and then I use the hand mixer on it to fluff it up a bit and then pour the sugar in and blend the 2 with the hand mixer until creamy. Works a treat.

If your butter is not soft, you can put it in the preheating over if you are using a metal bowl. I did this once and it melted too much (it should not be clear for creaming) so i stuck it in the freezer for a couple mins and it was the right, soft consistency.

Peace!

mix the two together and your blender would work if you can see the butter&sugar to know when to stop. It is fine for you to do it by hand though. In your blender, you will not get every bit out, and your recipe may suffer for that. Use a strong wooden spoon, and stir stir stir away! You will want to do it briskly, thus the "beat" terminology. It is easier if the bowl is somewhat low to you to give you the best arm strength. When the sugar dissolves into the butter, and it is no longer granuals, it will be creamy.

I have used a fork before. You'll want the butter to be just a little cooler than room temperature, not straight out of the fridge.
