after a series of visits to hospital and various investigations sufferer is told nothing can be done. The problem is sciatica like stabbing pain in one leg below the knee. It is NOT sciatica, much more severe, is more or less continuous. With regular bouts of such strong pain it is difficult to keep balance. Some pain killers have been subscribed and taken, that is Dihydrakodeine and paracetamol (excuse please my poor spelling). These give very little relief. Reluctant to use stronger medication but is desperate to find some way of alleviating the distress the pain is causing. Has anyone else suffered anything similar or know any words of comfort.
P.S. The condition seems to have been aggravated by a fall onto hard surface floor.

The pain began about a year ago. The severity increased after the fall that was mentioned.
Do you realise how much your concern and helpful answers have meant I wonder. The comfort of seeing that other people take the trouble to take someone else's pain seriously has made such a difference. I wish you could have seen the look of amazement when in such a short time so many of you took the trouble to post a reply.
Now with some new ideas to consider now, and doing something positive, following them up will actually make the pain more bearable.
Thank you, thank you.

You have a disk herniation. See a neurologist or other pain-mangement doctor. There have been VAST improvements in the treatment of disk problems over the past five years and you do NOT have to live in pain. An MRI will show that I am correct.
Good luck and get it treated soon.

My heart goes out to you !!! I've been suffering now since April with Sciatica and have had the same painkillers as yourself which didn't do anything to relieve my pain, so I kept asking my GP for something more stronger! then finally he prescribed Oxynorm, which did the trick, but it is a controlled drug? and it does have many side effects, constipation being the worst. So, if you can get, there's nothing to loose, Good Luck.

I suffered from years of chronic pain....
I finally got my diagnoses of ankylosing spondylitis, fibromyalgia, rheumatoid arthritis and bulging discs..
I spent 5 years trying different medications and found that morphine and a muscle relaxant plus regular Panamax helps me...
I know you dont want to take pharmaceutical drugs..
Gentle exercise is good even if it is a few laps around the backyard. It can hurt but it will make sure the muscles dont waste away..
Aromatherapy oils work well, and also chamomile and relaxing blends of tea.
My heart goes out to you, and I really hope you find some relief for the sufferer..

My sympathy for you hun. But i'm afraid, what you have described, i would say IS sciatica. I have exactly the same. I have had this prob for many years........sometimes it is bearable, other times i cannot walk,so i know how severe it can get I also suffer with fibromyalgia, again, an extremely painful illness. we all react differently to painkillers hun.........usually, they work for so long, then have no effect. So, because of this, i have my own "sod it" club!. My stubborness & sense of humour gets me through most days, lol...but try wheat bags on the main source of the pain. don't overdo things, but don't rest too much either. You will know what you can and cant do.........just becareful.

Try Physiotherapy, electric pain management technics (like TENS), neural mobilisation, heat / cold.. try contacting a pain clinic. Without knowing what the problem is, I can't help any more. Perhaps the reason for the pain cannot be repaired but usually the pain can be relieved. Good luck!

OMG, I got the same thing as we speak! Sitting down for long periods of time does not help!
Stretching exercises are good and I am at the moment wearing a heat belt that I bought from chemist, that helps a lot! it is sciatica, have had it for years, you just get worse bouts of it sometimes!
i will email u a good site when i find address

ask for a MRI scan . it took me 26 years to know what my problem was, nobody cared until i broke my knee last year and they found a disfuntion in both my knees, ive had an operation on both and now i can walk pain free, nothing shows up on exrays, so demand an MRI. it may take a while but sure is worth it in the end good luck , been there,!!!

best i can say is get stronger medications. i would suggest amputatin the leg but that is a bit extreme. stronger medication would help the pain but also impare you a-little-bit or maybe a-lot-a-bit. talk to a specialist see if you can pinpoint the problem and maybe find a way to treat it like phisycal therapy or maybe an implant of somesort.
i know a few people who suffer from chronic pain but they are all different cases than yours. one of them is a huge stone on so many medications i dont think she is ever not impared (not a good idead.... she has chrones) and my ex girlfriends mother has some sort of chronic pain that the doctors dont know what it is. she just takes plenty of painkillers. still not that good for you but she cant help it. hope you find a way to make it better.

Seems you continue to treat the symptom rather than treat the offending problem.. If you get no help anywhere else, try your local chiropractor..This is the typical case they have present to their office. I speak from experience, is why I went into the practice.
