I would say it depends on your gender and culture. In the white, American culture, if you are a woman, it is more stigmatized to be dependent on alcohol... however if you are male it is more socially accepted (I believe this also goes for the Mexican culture). IF you are African American or part of that culture, then being addicted to drugs would potentially be a less stigmatized position. All depends... and also depends on what drug. Cannabis compared to crack/cocaine or meth have different connotations.

In general I would say the N. American culture places a social stigma on being drug dependent. Most families have dealt with alcoholism in some capacity and have a better understanding of it. I think people view drug dependence as darker and more frightening because of the erratic behaviour. Both conditions fall under chemical dependency and I prefer this term as it encompasses the many addictions without identifying them by their organic make up.

It is not a question of which one has more social stigma to it. Both addictions are terrible for the person who is addicted because that person is basically the slave of either drugs or alcohol. No matter what the addiction is (food, sex, alcohol, drugs, gambling...) the person is totally out of control. I don't care what addiction people judge as more socially correct. I care about the person who suffers from an addiction and feel sorry for whoever is in that situation.

I am a little late with my answer as usual, Sorry. I can't type and my keyboard sticks!!! Anyway, back to your question. I worked, as a nurse on a drug and alcohol abuse unit. Often those alcoholics would say things like, "well, at least I don't do drugs!" and addict of other substances would say the same regarding alcohol! It is common for a chemically dependent person, regardless of their drug of choice, to begin to use a different chemical when/if they are trying to clean up from their drug of choice. They, somehow see this as less addicting ar dangerous. This possibillity is taught and stressed in most rehabs.

In very very loose, general sort of way, I think people view drug dependency as an unfortunate 'illness' almost, so tend to be more pitying, where as alcoholics are just viewed as drunkards with no self control...

it depends...both are embarrassing because while under the influence of these two things people act stupidly and do things they'll regret...so they're both equally bad...and they're both physically bad too
