If you have taken something from a store and get caught and they take your details and call your mum to pick you up..does that mean you've got a criminal record or will they tell you if you have got one?

Juvenile petty crime records are erased after ten years, so no need to worry that it'll come back to haunt you, if all you did was nick a pack of jammy dodgers fromthe local shop.

That is quite astonishing and perhaps a reason for a criminal justice change!
Surely to god you would remember going to court and facing a magistrate or judge and being told
'CASE PROVED'
If you have forgotten that 'god help us all'
If none of that happened you are a free person with no previous convictions

If you have not been arrested for theft/shoplifiting by the police, then I'd say you DO NOT have a criminal record.

If you never went to court, you don't have a "record." The criminal record stems from conviction, not from police contact.

No that is NOT a criminal record. You will know when you do have one because you will have been to court. Even a caution does not constiture a criminal record.

You would know that you have a record if you have ever been arrested. Surely you would remember such a traumatic event. Here's some more information...

For an adult, you don't have a record unless you are convicted in a court of law.
But in your case, the police may have a file on you, but since you did ont go before the juv judge I doubt you have a record

It sounds like you have no record!!! If all they did was what you said then take it as a warning!!! You do not want a criminal record so be careful. You should always be careful of how your actions can be construed. If it looks like you are guilty then people will assume you are even though we are supposed to be innocent until proven guilty.

If you would like to know whether you have a criminal record, you could apply to the Scottish Criminal Bureau, where all the files are archived. Apply for a basic disclosure of criminal convictions, which would include convictions, cautions and reprimands.
