You can try a kind of conditioning. If it were my office, I'd have you come in and watch me work on a 10 year old...if it's a smal procedure, soemtiems that's even w/o anesthetic. Then you think, well, geez, it doestn' hurt that little kid..no big deal!

Headphones are a good suggestion.

I wouldn't personally mind if a patient brought play-doh. If you had a stuffed animal, also ok. ;) I do draw the line at live pets; had a woman come in w/ her chihuahua once. nooooo.....

Also, if you wanted to pray, hey, it's a free country, whatever helps you get through. I had a women in detnal school who would pray for me after every visit. I used to joke, "Hey, that's original; most people are invoking the Almighty BEFORE the job..." :)

But serioulsy, the drill is just noise. You might also try this; visit the dentist before and ask if you can "play with it." I let kids do that! Just hold it...look at it.... step on the pedal to make it run. See,....just water and air and a lot of noise! it won't bite...

Good luck.!

I didn't know that still existed. A long time ago, I was afraid- but have you been to the dentist lately? They let you watch tv during it, have headphones on, you won't even hear the drill, and I guarantee you won't feel a damn thing. The worst part is the gigantic bill!

Flowers is from a different planet- you don't need to pray at all, and no dentist in their right mind is going to let any fruitcake play with play dough while they are performing delicate operations. Flowers is a nutjob, it's nowhere near that bad.

Yes I was like that until I had my elbow cut open at the Veterans Hospital for surgery. In the middle of surgery the numbing wore off. Talk about hurt. The next day I went and had a tooth pulled. No sweat after what I had been thru.

everybody does have this kind fear or reluctance. however, if ever you can't avoid being drilled, make sure to put on thick panty pads or any absorbent materials before the ordeal. it helps a lot in times of troubles...

First of all, pray that God will help you through the situation. The Bible says God is near to help in time of need. Ask the dentist to let you listen to ear-phones. Here's what I did. I took along play dough that was pliable enough for me to work over, thus transferring the angst. It keeps my mind occupied and my hands busy doing something energetic. It really works!

Depending on where you live, there are dentists that specialize in patients who have a phobia. One dentist in California will pre-medicate his patients and promises to work with them thru there fears.

Do some research and you will find one that will work with you. Everyone needs their Doctor and their Dentist.
