It is a reality. That text is Rev. 13:18. It says, "Here is wisdom. Let him that harth understanding count the number of the beast; for it is the number of a man; and his number is Six hundred threescore and six.."
One of the official titles of the pope is "Vicarius Filii Dei. These three words are Latin for "Vicar of the Son of God." Webster defines "vicar" as a substitute, a person who acts in the place of another, Since this is a Roman Power, it is only logical that the method of computation would be in Roman numerals. This was done frequently in historic times for important names. Taken numerically, the papal title is seen to be 666.

The wild beast has a name, and this name is a number: 666. Six, as a number, is associated with Jehovah’s enemies. (Daniel 3:1-23) The number six falls short of seven, which stands for completeness from God’s standpoint. Therefore, a triple six represents gross imperfection.

A name identifies a person. So how does this number identify the beast? John says that it “is a man’s number,” not that of a spirit person, so the name helps to confirm that the wild beast is earthly, symbolizing human government. Just as six fails to measure up to seven, so 666—six to the third degree—is a fitting name for the world’s gigantic political system that fails so miserably to measure up to God’s standard of perfection. The world’s political wild beast rules supreme under the name-number 666, while big politics, big religion, and big business keep that wild beast functioning as an oppressor of mankind and a persecutor of God’s true people.

There is a whole study on "calculating." the study is called gematria. It's too broad of a subject to cover in Answers. I'd say that the code is cracked - it just isn't the exact answer you were hoping for ... but you can still learn quite a bit about the number and its calculation.

This "code" was cracked centuries ago. To know the number of the beast, one has to find out first who the beast is. According to the Bible, the beast will:

Come up out of the pagan Roman empire (Daniel 7)
Be a small nation (Daniel 7)
Be a kingdom (Daniel 7)
Be headed by a man (Daniel 7, Revelation 13)
Come up in Europe (Daniel 7)

These characteristics and many others are conclusive proof that the antiChrist beast of Revelation 13 is none other than the Roman Catholic church. The papacy rose up in AD538 amongst the kingdoms of Europe, received its power from pagan Rome, slew greater than 50 million saints of the most high during the dark ages, blasphemes God by claiming to be God on earth and claims God's attributes (infalliability, power to forgive sins), ideas that formed the papacy were forming in Paul's day, is the smallest nation on earth but one of the most powerful, is headed by a man, will still be around at the second coming, received a deadly wound in 1798 when the pope was taken captive by Napoleon (pope died in captivity), had the deadly wound healed when Mussolini gave the Roman Catholic church back the Vatican in 1929, has been growing into power ever since (witness the world wondering after the beast last year at the funeral of Pope John Paul ll. The church tried to change the law of God by changing the day of worship from Saturday to Sunday.

The Roman Catholic church with its system of mass and repentance mimics the High Priestly ministry of Jesus Christ. Anti Christ means, in place of Christ. They have usurped God's authority, even proclaiming that the pope in god on earth (see 2 Thessalonians 2). They have married paganism with Christianity and are thus rightly called antiChrist. The number 666 is the number of the Pope.

God does not want you to be ignorant about this haughty blasphemous power that is now concealing its true nature behind lamb's clothes. As we see the world falling into chaos with terrorism, natural disasters, declining morality etc., the belief will be that it is because we have strayed from God and if we will get back to God then he will stop the insanity. As such, who will lead us "back to God" but the moral leader of the world, the pope. People will give up freedom for the sake of security and the Papacy will once again return to what she has always been, the enemy of Christ.
