I've always wondered what the benefit of religion is (particularly Christianity) so I'm asking this question towards Christians, but really it's a question that could be applied to all religions. How is Christianity good? Does the Bible teach us morals? What about the parts where it says it's acceptable to sell your child into slavery, or your daughters into sexual slavery? If you can say that's not good, then you have your own ideals of morals without even needing to open the book. Does it teach you to be a good person? Not really, since most of the Old Testament and parts of the New Testament talk about different conditions in which it is okay to kill people. Is the Bible a holy book, proof that God exists? If that's the case, why does it have more information on when to sacrifice animals than anything that is really important, like mathematics or ways to combat cancer? Why does the book have nothing in it that couldn't be written by just some normal person?

I guess what I'm getting at is the question of whether God even exists. Even then if there is a supreme creator, nothing in the Bible or in history even shows that a god has ever done anything. How do you know that the Bible is right? Does it bother you that most Christians oppose things like an HPV vaccine because it might promote promiscuity, or that Catholics in Africa help spread AIDS by saying condom use is evil. Isn't it a bit ridiculous that millions suffer and die because some Christians don't want people to sleep together? How about the fact that Christians are slowing down stem-cell research and studies into human cloning? I really just don't see the benefit of Christianity, and there's no real proof that anything in the Bible ever happened and it's just a drag on the world, along with all other religions.

As to the person who said I need to actually read the Bible, I've read portions and a lot of it just doesn't matter. The 10 Commandments really aren't anything special, they're things that most other societies had outlawed before the times of the Christians, and the first 4 are really worthless in the modern world.

It's not that I don't know things about Christianity, it's just that no religion is really applicable in the current world, and it's dangerous to let such archaic and thoughtless things like Christianity and Islam to continue, because it's just slowing down the world and scientific process.

It is only useful if it embraces Christ's message that we should love and help each other and stop killing each other. The bible is just so much yada yada written by superstitious people who died a long time ago. It has absolutely no relevence to our current world. It is completely meaningless.
Religion is just a way for people to engage in the "us and them" way of thinking that is only harmful in this life. People are killing each other in the name of religion/god. How is this OK?
There are less damaging purposes of religion, like denial of death, answer to questions we simply can't answer?etc...
We need to wake up and smell the love and compassion and get past all this old world superstitious nonsense that simply does not work in our current world. We need to evolve past war and move on to solving our problems in a better way.
HEY PEOPLE, GOD IS NOT GOING TO SOLVE OUR PROBLEMS - WE HAVE TO! GIVING UP OUR RESPONSIBILITY TO A MENTAL CONSTRUCT IS THE WORST COP-OUT I CAN IMAGINE!

God takes people where they are and leads them a step at a time. He doesn't require anyone to become "perfect" instantly. The Bible must be read in context and with an understanding of what was happening at that time.
It also helps if you remember that we live in a fallen world, and that God's priorities are not necessarily the same as ours. He's going for long-term benefits - restoring earth to its original perfection.

It's a very useful tool for politicians. Christians make up an extremely large voting group. You have a large group of people blandly accepting the bible is beneficial and the word of God. The stories of violence and sex and injustices are sugar-coated and rationalized away, just as it is in politics. All the politicians have to do is throw in some references to God, be seen going to church, and make some "promises" about family values to get Christian voters to gravitate in their direction.

The biggest advantage is that it's easiest club in the world to join. One need not understand it, qualify for it earn membership in it or practice it. Just mouth the words "I'm a christian" and you're in. If it took any serious study, commitment or any special requirements for membership, it would have ended up on the trash heap of history long ago.

I think that Christians were deceived and led astray by Paul (Soul) who corrupted the pure teaches of Jesus PBUH and hence Christians feel secure as they believe that they are saved and the price of their sins were paid for by Jesus while the truth is that they will be accounted for it at last and will go to hell except whom Allah will exempt according to his wisdom:
Holy Quran 4:123:
It will not be in accordance with your desires, nor the desires of the People of the Scripture. He who doeth wrong will have the recompense thereof, and will not find against Allah any protecting friend or helper.
As for Islam it is the solution for all community problems in this life and it is the only way for the real eternal happiness.

That's not a question, its your way of throwing a fit to what you dont have, understand, or even now. The depths of a Fathers love for his children.Maybe if you ask him he will intorduce himeself to you. A lot of people walk threw life by faith. Only a select few actually no he really exists. Maybe if you did no him you possibly might have a whole new life.

...The Bible, as well as secular historians, tells us the story of Jesus of Nazareth, who made fantastic claims about Himself - that He is God, and the only way to God. He leaves us no wiggle room. Either He is a liar, a lunatic,or He is Lord of all - and you must decide.
...What are the benefits of Christianity - I will name a few.
..1. After feeling tremendous guilt over his part in the slave trade, John Newton repented and became a believer. He later wrote "Amazing Grace."
..2. After Elizabeth Elliott's husband and her friends' husbands were murdered by the Auca Indians in Ecuador, several of those women determined to move in with the Aucas, and later won the whole tribe for Christ. The original mission was to reach the Aucas, before they wiped themselves out totally, because of their murderous ways. The whole tribe became believers in Jesus Christ, and the murder rate went down to zero - without the help of any state or government program.
..3 1833 - Slavery abolished in British Empire: 45 million pounds paid in compensation to free 780,933 slaves. Wilburforce, along with Buxton, Macaulay, and Clark . . . all evangelicals who were converted under Wesley's ministry, were the top leaders in ending slavery.
...4. I know of Christian missionaries who bring the Gospel to other countries, and also assist the native people in forming and sustaining legitimate businesses.
...5 You'll have to clue me in as to where it says to sell your child into slavery - you must remember that the Bible was not written to me, but for me. (i.e. the command for Noah to build an ark does not mean I must build an ark).
...The Bible teaches we are all sinners (all have sinned and come short of the glory of God), and that God has a marvelous plan of salvation for all who will believe on Jesus Christ.
...It is no wonder to me that the Bible doesn't contain a cure for cancer; it doesn't have a recipe for chicken soup, either, since it is not a medical book nor a cook book. It will lead you to a personal relationship with the Great Physician, though.
...The Bible does claim to be authoritative (All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work. 2 Timothy 3:16-17) and at some point one must come to decision - to trust it as God's word, to pretend that some of it is God's word (and of course, these folks haven't how to tell the difference as to what would be His word, and what would not be His word), or to reject it outright.
...I trust it as God's word. It is interesting to me that this book is so hated and despised by some governments, that it is confiscated - why would they be that way, if the book is powerless? Daniel Webster, the great statemen and lawmaker in the middle 1800's, said that everything that makes a good Christian make a good citizen.
...Men have been martyred, because they dared to buck the church in power and translate the Bible so the common man could have it and read it - why was that such a threat to church authorities?
...Jesus said in John 7:17, "If any man is willing to do His will, he shall know of the teaching, whether it is of God, or whether I speak from Myself."
... What will you do with Jesus who is called Christ?
...John 6:29 says, "This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent."
I urge you to believe on the Lord Jesus Christ and be saved.
...You shall know the truth and the truth shall make you free. John 8:32

Afterlife, eternal happiness, blah blah blah.
It's the same in every religion. If you follow them, do what they say, and pray to their invisible deity, then the things they promised to you that will come true after you die. That way no one can prove the religion is wrong. It was a genius move to whoever started it, but nowadays I can't see why an educated person would find religion to be something worthwhile.
