Get a second cage. For one thing, you are going to need to quarantine the new budgie. He could be carrying a disease and you don't want your lovebird getting it. Put the budgie in his own cage in another area of the house. Take care of the budgie's feeding, handling, and cage cleaning last every day after your lovie so you are not transferring germs from him to your lovie. Keep him quarantined for at least a month but longer is better.

Second, I would not recommend keeping a lovebird with a budgie. Lovebirds are very aggressive, espcially the hens, and if you just toss a budgie in with it I practically guarantee you the lovebird will kill it. Lovebirds are notorious for biting off other birds' toes and even killing birds larger than themselves such as cockatiels. I would not try it, get a separate cage for the budgie. Over time, introduced carefully in a neutral territory, they may or may not be able to get along but they really are best off housed in separate cages. My peach faced lovebird hen does not hesitate to attack my African Grey who is ten times her size!

NO.......
IF, and I stress the word IF, they got along you could safely do so but IF the lovebird did not like the parakeet his/her superior beak strength would leave your poor budgie either dead or seriously injured. I would instead recommend that you put their cages side by side with about an inch between them and observe their interaction. If you don't see obvious signs that they won't get along then move the cages to the point of touching but stand guard and be prepared to move the cages apart at the first sign of a fight. If they appear to get along for a couple of days this way.. ie. grooming and chattering then you may try them in the same cage but again, be prepared to stick your hand in the cage to rescue your budgie even at the risk of a bite to yourself.

Under NO circumstances should a lovebird be put in with any other bird. Lovebirds are about the most aggressive of the parrot family, and they would kill any other bird.
It is also NOT recommended to get a mate for the lovebird. They may reject the new mate, especially if you have a female. If she rejects the new mate, she would kill it.
Also, do not let the lovebird fly around with any other bird(s) for the same reason.

NO! Lovebirds can seriously injure or kill parakeets without even meaning to.

You can put their cages close together (but far enough so no biting can occur) and that will be company for both.

Simple Answer: Yes..but:

They shouldn't be kept together. They should be kept with their own kind. Parakeets are very territorial. And your love bird should have another lovebird, it'll be so much happier with a member of it's own kind. Most birds shouldn't be kept with other birds outside their species anyway.

Go to a pet store like Petsmart or your local veterinarian. They can probably best answer this for you. You can also check with your local bookstore like Barnes and Noble or Books-A-Million. You can buy books there on birds. Check Amazon.com on the internet for parakeet books too. Hope this helps.

you can try if the cage is big enough but parakeets and lovebirds do not generally hang out together...if the animals are young enough it might work...
