I agree, so many of the respondants say we have been hit - yeah but none have wiped us out and I never heard anyone say - I remember when the meteor of -- hit.. have you? Good question!

many have struck the earth. there are MANY craters from large celestial objects and meteorites hitting the earth.
but, unlike the moon, the earth has an atmosphere. upon entering the atmosphere, most meteors burn up before landfall. also, many more hit the oceans (which cover 3/4 of the earth's surface) and the impact doesn't show. several US States have craters. there are dozens in the Soviet Union and all over Europe and Asia. Africa as well. South America. Where are you getting your mis-information? Are you bible-home-schooled?
get a REAL education!! read something other than a ridiculous damm cult book!!

No, some of them have missedf us but NOT all have. There have been some mass extinctions throughtout earth's 4.6 billion history, which can give an clue on what happened and at the top of the chart is the metorite. Metorites are also what make shootings starts, and there is a theory how water got on earth is from metorites hitting the earth realeasing water (very lopng theory). We are exspecting a meteorite to come very close in the 2020s.

Where did you hear that? The earth has been hit by countless meteorites over the course of its existence, and to this day is being hit. Some have been bigger than others (see Meteor Crater in Arizona and the enormous crater signature around the Yucatan Peninsula), some have been enormous, and some are no bigger than baseballs.
How does this involve evolution at all?

2 Peter 3:3 Knowing this first, that there shall come in the last days scoffers, walking after their own lusts,
4 And saying, Where is the promise of his coming? for since the fathers fell asleep, all things continue as they were from the beginning of the creation.
5 For this they willingly are ignorant of, that by the word of God the heavens were of old, and the earth standing out of the water and in the water:
6 Whereby the world that then was, being overflowed with water, perished:
7 But the heavens and the earth, which are now, by the same word are kept in store, reserved unto fire against the day of judgment and perdition of ungodly men.
You are waisting your time trying to explain to these ignorant people that evolution is a dumb idea, I have debated allot of them here on Yahoo Q&A, I won all of them.
Keep it up
God Bless
Jean

We haven't avoided being hit at all. There are many craters on our planet, say in Arizona for example. The Earth is geologically active, and the processes of erosion and deposition erase many of the craters. Plus, about 75% of the planet is covered by water, and there are no craters in water. The moon has so many craters because it is not geologically active. To say the Earth has only been hit one time is just plain false.

It's this thing called the atmosphere that burns up the vast majority of space debris that comes near our planet. In fact the earth is bombarded by debris on a regular basis but most of it doesn't make it through the outer atmosphere, and of course this question has nothing to do with biological evolution.

I am not an "evolutionist". I am a scientist. Keep your political slurs to yourself. Please do some research before asking baseless questions. Have you ever heard of Meteor Crater, Arizona? Have you heard of the woman who survived being struck by a meteor that came through her roof? Do you know how many meteors have been recovered on Earth? Do you know how many lakes and valleys are meteor craters?

Actually if you look at the Earth's surface, it is covered with impact craters. Of course on Earth, wind and weathering can make many of these seem to be something other than what they are, like a hill valley.

1) Because, cosmically speaking, the Earth is tiny.
2) We HAVE been hit. There are craters. Check it out.
3) Sometimes meteors bounce off of our atmosphere.

the earths magnetic field and gravity and atmosphere all combine in ways to deflect or burn up many but eventually we will get hit bad. Outer space is a big area so we are a small target relatively speaking. it is just the odds.
sooner or later KABOOM
