Most try them out of curiosity. Good thing now is that the side effects are advertised everywhere, so young people are less likely to try them for that reason (unless they are idiots). However there are also things such as stress and depression that lead to drug use.
Drugs make you feel good. They provide a feeling of happiness that the person most likely isn't getting from the real world. Sometimes you feel like you're on a cloud, not worried about reality at all. Which is the escape most addicts are looking for.
For soft core drugs (which I'd say are alcohol and marijuana) it's more of a relaxing feeling that is being sought. Of course this is just from my experience, and I'm sure there are those who wish to abuse even those drugs.
The world is undoubtedly a harsh, and cruel place to live. Some people just don't have the coping skills to get by within it. Which is why rehab and therapy are so valuable. They can teach those people who are addicted ways to feel happy naturally, and to deal with their problems without using drugs.

Some take it out of plain curiousity and become physically addicted. For example, cocaine, heroine and meth are all highly addictive and some can actually become addicted on the first use. Physically their bodies think it is needed and the drive to continue is strong. For many, it is a way of silencing their inner demons and to stifle the pain they feel inside that they do not want to deal with and face. It's a way of hiding from their pain because the drugs make you feel happy and calm and "alive" no matter what your present circumstances. Once the drug wears off, the pain returns. Sometimes they just feel so great you don't want to stop at all. Different drugs have different affects but the reasons for use are almost always the same and are the same reasons addiction occurs.

There are many reasons that people initially take drugs: curiosity, wanting to escape themselves or their feelings, for entertainment or amusement to name a few.

While certain drugs cause similar feelings in most people, others may have different reactions both physical and psychological. When a person stops taking a drug, his body starts to work on cleaning out or detoxifying the body. This process can have varying results ranging from irritability to feeling feverish or naseaus and "dope sick" to the DTs or delirium tremens (withdrawal from alcohol which can be fatal). This discomfort can be so intolerable that even a person that really wants to stop using is rendered powerless and goes back to the drugs.

Brain chemistry makes drugs so addicting. Our body is a chemical factory and addiction is a dis-ease that cannot be cured but can be arrested though abstinance.

If you are really interested in doing research, I suggest searching Wikipedia and the internet using key words like " recreational drug effects, chemical addition, addiction recovery, Narcotics Anonymous and Nar-Anon." You'll find a whole bunch of information. Take what you like and leave the rest.

If someone you love is addicted, I suggest you find Nar-Anon or Al-Anon for yourself. It has really helped me to understand addiction and the addict.

Happy Thanksgiving!

I used drugs recreationaly over 20 years ago. For me it was readily available and felt just like getting drunk without the hang over. I guess your body gets addicted or if you have an addictive personality you just want to always feel high and happy and have a good time...nothing bothers you even though you can be a bother and worry to others...find something better for you that can give you a natural high...drugs are not the answer and aren't worth the risk. PERIOD!

They also say that some people with mental illness self medicate unknowingly to help themselves feel better...

They get a "rush", a sudden feeling similar to a sexual feeling. It can be addictive from the first time and it can kill the first time. Don't try it. It will ruin your life.

I wish, they could all visit my parents' house and meet my brother, then and maybe then, they'll understand the damages, and will quit for good.
