my uncles almost drowned. but maybe he is just unlucky. Can you tell me?

Yes all dogs know how to swim, including Basset hounds; but, very young and very old dogs are more likely to drown because they may be unable (knowing how and being able to are two different things) to swim, they lose strength more quickly, or they are unable to get out of the water, like in a pool.

To "CAN BASSETS SWIM?"I'm not an expert,but I've never seen one that could'nt yet. Some like water, better than others,just like children,some you can't get in the "TUB"some you can't get them out ! Your uncle,s dog that you say is just unlucky, well sounds to me, that you really got that wrong, I would say "HE'S A LUCKY DOG!"Then again, he's got you! By the way,just to add a little humor to your almost frightful rememorance. I have a minicher dovermenpincher I took him to the lake and he was chaseing a bird that he ran so fast, he actually walked on water!PEACE

Because of the heaviness of their front ends and the shortness of their legs, bassets can only swim short distances, and that with great dificulty. Bassets should not be allowed into situations where they have to swim. Bassets, like french bulldogs, cannot swim

All dogs have the instinct and ability to swim as all cats can climb unless they have a disability your dog should be able to swim......your uncles dog shows that they do have a chance of drowning but if you worry about what could happen nothing would happen!!!!

I think all dogs have a natural instinct to swim, but I would guess a dog could drowned under certain circumstances.

Yes, they CAN swim, and most of mine like swimming, but they are not strong swimmers and should never be unsupervised around water.
