Set a time limit for being online. Then, read a book; put a puzzle together; write a letter (on paper with a pen/pencil) (GASP), find someplace local to volunteer, learn to cook (or if you know how already, cook), and then there's the always famous, if you're really bored and tempted by the internet; CLEAN YOUR ROOM. Ha ha! Hope this helps, I also have a 13 yr old, his addiction is video games. Good luck!

I really do know how you feel, my age is not that much older then yours and I live out in the middle of nowhere, quite a few miles from any of my friends and no car to drive me to anywhere interesting. I'm on the Internet for what seems to be the whole day and whenever I'm away from the Internet I always feel the need to check and see if any of my friends (from school and from online) are on AIM and such.
Don't panic, you're not going to go blind ;) you might need glasses but make sure you have good lighting around your computer. Take breaks from doing whatever your doing. Even if you're in the middle of feeding your pets on Neopets just take a break, put them in the Neolodge and just turn off your monitor. Do something to get your body working, walk around your room, stretch a bit, play a game of solitaire. Even watching TV for a half an hour. Set up a schedule for yourself. Get a pet, like a turtle or something small. If your parents are okay with other animals get a cat or a dog and take that time to take them for a nice 10 minute walk, or to feed them or just play with them.
Believe it or not, the Internet is completely in your control. You do not need to "keep coming back" to anything. And if you do, that website is obviously not a good one. Take a break from Neopets, your pets will never die if you don't feed them, and there won't be an atomic explosion if you don't check your neomail for a few days.
Although this may sound a bit stupid, get to know your mother or your father a bit better, look for things to do in neighboring places. Sure you might live in a small town, but ask your mom or dad if they would want to go on a road trip to do something fun.
Since you're a student, concentrate on making friends at school, don't be mean, don't get into arguments, always smile and be friendly and you will have a bunch of true friends... and on the weekends go out with them just to do something random, it doesn't matter what. I absolutely LOATHE exercising, but when it's with a few friends, walking or just riding bikes around is very fun ^^
Enjoy life because you only get a limited time. Don't waste it on a bunch of worthless pixels.

i kno ur problem, cos i am a semi-addict. u just need to allocate ur time and give urself limitations ok! like say u r only allowed to go on the net for 30 mins a day or sumting. Also, find a sport or a hobby that lets u interact with other people. The internet is a lonely place and could make u into a very solitary person. Don't get hooked...maybe try deleting some of your accounts (like neopets...i've tried that one, it's a waste of time!!!) Good Luck, your friends are waiting to play... ;)
well done for deleting that account...u'll benefit! o ja, Christmas is right around the corner...go for the bike!!!!!!! it'll get u outside more, and it's awesome!! maybe ask another close relative (gran or someone) for the iPod, and fones are getting cheaper and cheaper these days, so try saving up or raising money for a cheap one...good luck!!!!!!!!

this may seem fairly reasonable to some, or even amusing, but in fact if what you are saying is true, then there are some serious misplacement issues in your life! first thing that comes to my mind is...what were you lacking as a toddler/child. if you have concerns about this yourself, then you are half way to answering your own question!! you really need to start to generate other interests that are healthy.......reading, outdoor activities, swimming, bike riding, movies, friends, hobbies.....the list goes on. life is too short to waste the best years you have!!! seriously!!

So the best approach for excessive Internet use, Orzack believes, will be to treat it like binge eating, where the individual frequently engages in the activity to be restricted. She treats both by teaching clients how to set limits, balance activities, and schedule time, without having to go cold turkey. "People often change in six or eight sessions," she says.
Unfortunately, the affflicted rarely admit to the problem, and it usually takes a crisis with a job, relationship, or school to spur an Internet addict to seek treatment. More often, it's loved ones who turn to the experts. "Families notice things and call me," says Orzack. And she receives letters like this: "We got divorced one year after we got the computer. My wife was in chat rooms all the time and ignored our young daughter. She spent hundreds of dollars on phone bills. . . [and] had an affair on-line that turned into a real affair...Then she left. I don't know what to do. Please help." Now lawyers and family courts call Orzack and Young wanting them to testify about Internet addiction in divorce and custody battles. (In October, a Florida woman lost custody of her kids when her ex-husband convinced a judge that the woman was addicted to the Internet and thus incapable of properly caring for their children.)
College students are often vulnerable to Internet addiction because many universities provide free, unlimited access. At the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center at Austin, Scherer and her computer scientist husband Jacob Kornerup created a workshop, called It's 4 A.M. and I Can't--Uh, Won't--Log Off, to help students recognize harmful Internet habits. Scherer and Kornerup recommend keeping a chart sorting weekly Internet time into academic/professional and leisure/personal use. If a large part of your leisure time is spent on the Internet, she says, ask what you get out of it, what you're giving up, and why you're finding on-line time so much more pleasurable than other activities. Take note if your personal relationships are suffering.
Next, set a goal of how many hours a week you want to use the Internet. If your actual usage exceeds it, remind yourself to log off after a period of time. Set a kitchen timer and turn off the computer--no excuses--when it rings.
It's particularly important to separate work and play when on-line, says Jane Morgan Bost, Ph.D., assistant director of the University of Texas Counseling and Mental Health Center. Stay focused, visit only sites needed to complete work, and don't detour. Also, she says, cut back mailing list memberships and sort play e-mail from work e-mail.
