Are they really necessary? What do they offer that a good pair of Sporty Sunglasses can't offer? Do most people use goggles for night skiing as well?

All answers here are good......in addition, if it's snowing hard some resorts will not let you up the advanced lifts without having goggles (sunglasses won't do). I've had that happen.

Ski googles are great. Sunglasses also work too. The googles really help, expecially when it is snowing. Since you go so fast down the hill the snow comes right at your eyes. Making it hard to see whats in front of you. The googles also help keep your face warm. You definaleyneed something on your face though. Sometimes it is hard to use googles at night because they usually are tinted. i would reccomend getting non-tinted snow googles

Snow Goggles are designed to restrict the amount of glare from the snow and prevent snow blindness, regualer sunglasses are not.

I wear goggles because I wear contacts. I once got wind burn in my eyes. I couldn't remove my contacts.

Goggles vs Sunglasses: When you fall (expecially for snowboarders) you can lose sunglasses or they can break.

They keep the wind and snow out of your eyes. Sunglasses can't do that.

They keep the air out (most good ones) and they dont get scratched as easily as sunglasses.

I have gone skiing with both and after my first time skiing with glasses I would never do it again.

They protect your face more from cold and snow then sunglasses do. That's one thing...
