The members of my home group have all been on short-term missions outreaches - to Mexico, Shiprock, New Orleans. We've built and repaired homes, tended to children in orphanges.
We always come back on fire but we all know we don't really have to leave our community to find the broken and needy, eespecially the children!
I'm going back to Baja with one of my employees in mid-January.
Here's a link to these opportunities:

My employee wants to catch that fire and these week-long outreaches are a GREAT way to get your feet wet in a structured, organized way. You can quiz the group leaders while you're on them to get ideas and strategies for reaching out in your own community.
HUGE blessings on you for listening to your heart's brokenness for others!

Right down town, where you live. Or, you can come to my town, Jackson, Michigan. Every town has children who need help. Every town has people who have made bad decisions, and those decisions have ended up rubbing onto and ruining their children.

Big Brothers and Big Sisters
Tutoring programs at your schools
Habitat For Humanity (get those kids a house that's safe)

We have a shelter here called A.W.A.R.E. It's a domestic violence shelter where women and their children can flee to should they need to get out of a bad situation. Those places need help too.

What a great day to ask a great question: What can I do to be part of the solution?

the peace corps sound like an option for you. they provide assistance in many countries. unlike mission groups, they dont provide free handouts, so the community does not become dependent on freebies. There is plenty of help needed in your home country as well though. sometimes people need a hand-up not a hand-out and until each countries govt figures that out all the international aid in the world will never matter
