Butter is by definition quite hard, and to bake with it you need to soften it without causing it to melt. To do this, you use an appropriate implement such as a wooden spoon (this works best) and just start pressing the butter against the side of the bowl. As the butter softens, it becomes easier to work with. You'll notice that in most recipes the next step is to add sugar . . . you couldn't have done that comfortably without first creaming the butter as the sugar and butter would not mix.
