Hi,

I'm a guide (seeing-eye) dog psychiatrist and I know that whilst many other dogs can see better than some guide dogs they aren't really keen on helping humans; or so they tell me! In the case of guide dogs, they are also not too keen on the cold snowy weather. Thus not many of them are willing to volunteer to support blind Eskimos.

I am legally blind, and I have 21 sled dogs, as well as race them.

I would have to say "no", because the type of dogs used for dog sledding (we use Alaskan Huskies and Siberian Huskies) are not good for seeing eye dog type of work.

Because one is blind though, does not mean they are not able to dog-sled. I dog-sled all the time. It just means you have to trust your dogs more. . . and if I'm going out sledding somewhere I've never been --meaning the dogs dont know where they're going, I make sure someone is with me.

I hope that helps answer your question!

There are blind dog sledders, but their dogs are not guide dogs - they are sled dogs.

Labrador Retrievers are most commonly used for guide dog work; Golden Retrievers and German Shepherds are used as well and some organizations use Boxers and Standard Poodles as well.

It's only snow blindness, and you wear specs. with slits to cure it.
