I have a dog I adopted from a shelter four years ago. Even though he has never known hunger since I've had him, he still eats like it's going to be his last meal. I NEVER leave food out for him because he'd eat everything in sight, not "graze." He gets treats besides his regular food, but I don't think he'll ever get over the time when he didn't know where his next meal was coming from.

I agree with Aussie. It could be he was at some point starving and is afraid if he doesn't glom it, he won't get the meal, something might take it from him. Alot of animals that have been hungry in the past do that. You have to also be careful of him getting too fat because if you leave food out at all he will probably eat it all again fearful of going hungry at some point.

He may have been starved so eats fast thinking someone will take his food away. Feed in small quantities by hand would be good so you can control how fast he eats. Give water in the bowel in small amounts

pretty common,,, dogs normally start this behavior when there is competition for the food. Usually when they are being fed with their littermates before they ever leave for their new homes.

well...most dogs who eat to fast have usually been starved by a previous owner who doesn't care..
so you should give your dog smaller amounts of food
this may sound gross but it helps
poor some hot water into your dogs food bowl with less food.
trust me it helps

try putting a rubber toy or ball in his water bowl, that way it makes it harder for him to "gulp" the water all at once... OR, you can get the water bottle things for dogs, they look like the hamster waterers, but only bigger!
