what did yankee doodle name macoroni? and why do you think that?

The current version of the song Yankee Doodle is thought to have been sung by the British Army during the American Revolution. A macaroni was a colonial term for a "dandy" who tried too hard to be fashionable - the joke was that the Yankees thought that sticking a feather in their hat made them fashionable.
So it was the hat that was called macaroni.

Hmmm, i dunno...I've always wondered about that. It seems to go with either the hat or the feather, but that still doesn't quite make sense.
