I would love to get a dog but I live in a flat with only a small shared garden. I do not want to provide an unsuitable home for a dog and am in two minds about what to do. I will be able to walk the dog every day but would like to know what bred of dog would suit this sort of home and would not be frustrated at being inside during the day?

My sister in law breeds Cavalier King Charles spaniels. They are very happy to stay indoors.

I think there are many breeds that would be suitable for you although if noise is a consideration some of the breeds that wouldbe good for your flat and small garden are going to be noisy.

I used to show Dachshunds and let me tell you, when they get going they'll wake the dead! lol Chihuahua's are known for being "yappy" as well and you'll want to make sure you don't have problems with your neighbors.

As someone previously mentioned, there are plenty of small to medium sized dogs that are not as highly active as toy breeds that will be very suitable for a flat. We have a Cocker Spaniel, and have had them all my life, and they adapt very well to the flat or the farm. We live in a small flat with very limited outdoor space and Chip plays inside and mostly only goes outside to potty and is perfectly happy.

Best of luck!

Those with low energy levels don't even need extensive walks or workouts as long as they get sufficient exercise and are not overfed.

Toy dogs have high energy levels in some cases, but they are small enough that they can satisfy their needs running about the apartment.

Small to medium size low to moderate energy dogs that are also suitable for apartment living include:

Cocker Spaniel,
Clumber Spaniel,
Sussex Spaniel,
Basset Hound,
Beagle,
Basenji,
Norwegian Elkhound,
Dachshund,
Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen,
Whippet,
most terriers,
Bichon Frise,
Bulldog (as long as there's no flights of stairs to climb daily),
French Bulldog,
Keeshond,
Finnish Spitz,
American Eskimo,
Lhasa Apso,
Schipperke, Corgi,
Shetland Sheepdog.

well I love dogs, but lots of people don´t, and having a dog in a flat sometimes is not a great idea. no 1 the neighbours are sure to complain at some time or another, best make sure you can have a dog in the flat , dogs need lots of excersise and attention , they get up to all sorts whilst your out.

ok..first all of..DONT GET A TERRIER. they are not suitable for small home living....i'd recommen a shetland sheepdog...chihuahua...or pomeranian. They like being indoors..dont need lots of excercise..and are quick to train. If you know you are gonna have lots of time to spend with the dog and do fun things like agility etc..id go for a sheltie...they are bright loyal and obedient...and have lovely temperaments. They will take as much or as little excercise as you can give..they aren't noisy and they are so fluffy they keep you lovely and warm ...why not try looking in the library for some dog breed books and see if you can find one suitable....

well alot of small dogs will adapt to living in a flat but it depends on your present circumstances.for example are you out at work all day?if so you should'nt get a dog, with out access out side all day it would either pee everywhere or hold itself in discomfort all day.how much exercise can you give a dog a day?do you want a pup or older dog?if you are planning on getting one then i would advice an older rescue dog.the toy breeds are best for your situation and i would personally recomend a cavilier king charles spaniel, they are easy to train, very loving, quite house pets, and are excellent for first time dog owners.they would adapt to apartment living quite easily.good luck

maybe a little dog like a chiwowa. They aren't all like paris's dog tinkerbell, my friends have one and it acts like a dog, not a person.
