Hi. I myself just started Tae Kwon Do, this week. I myself am in love with it. It's just utterly amazing. I am in pretty good shape, since I ran JV on my High School's Cross Country, and that TKD session gave me a hell of a workout. I was sweating in no time. And the amount of kicks we did also made my muscles sore, which leads me to think that it gave me a good anaerobic workout too. Yes, Tae Kwon Do includes punches but no where in the quantities seen in Karate. The rationale behind that is that your leg's are the most powerful parts of your body. So why not use them to your advantage. In my opinion you should be in pretty good shape to start, and should be flexible. If your not flexible, like me, then your going to have to work on it. Incorporate a stretching routine into your day.

My son use to take tae kwon do. I put him in classes when he was in middle school. Tae Kwon do is a form of fighting and there is punches as well as kicking. In practices you wear protected gears for head, hand and feet. People learn to pull their punches and kicks but beginners forgets. After a time you will be in contest where you do not wear protected gears and will not hold back so much on kicking and punching.

Tae kwon do means fist foot art. It was formulated by General Choi Hung Hi from kwando ( a korean kicking style) and karate. It has everything you will need. I am 15 and a 2nd degree black belt. I wish you well.

yea, u'll learn punches too..
i have a friend who's into this stuff, and i've seen his moves..
tae kwon do wil definitely help u become stronger (a lot of power punches and kicks, unless i'm such a sissy that a little punch hurts me a lot)..
more flexible (coz u'll learn to kick real high)..
and loads of other stuff..

I've been in TKD almost 15 years. It's a great art. Enjoy! Yes it includs punches & other hand techniques in addition to kicks. We also learn blocks. Benefits are many besided self defense. Great excercise, improved focus & self control are a few of them.

since im a taekwando black belt(GTF).i might shed some light.yup taekwando involves alot of kicking,since in taekwando competition.one on one match up,the winner is choosen by how much of kick he manage to land on his opponent,the highest point is given when you land your feet on your opponents face.basically taekwando are more involved in pattern movement,a combination of chopping,punching,kicking and more.you need to memorise it.they have their name as well.the pattern gets harder as your belt colour gets a higher ranking.if you are above 16,you could participate in weapon match up.anyway,taekwando keeps you fit and alert.cheers.

depends on the school
if its WTF it will be highly orientated toward kicking
ITF has a mixture of kicking and punching
positive aspect is that you'll become more flexible/agile
you'll become adept at kicking/taking a hit/possibly punching and learn to react to certain situations
