Seems to me you're starting at the wrong end. Der, die and das are the Nominative singular forms of the three articles; der is masculine (der Jung); die is feminine (die Frau) and das is neuter (das Auto). In the Accusative Singular they become den, die and das. In the Dative Singular they become dem, der and dem. In the Nominative Plural they ALL become 'die'. In the Accusative Plural they ALL become 'die'. In the Dative Plural they ALL become 'den'.
