My favourite quote is from Ancient Greece which Spartan mothers / wives / girlfriends would say to their sons / husbands / boyfriends when they went to war.

"Come home with your shield, or on it" The implication was that they wanted their men to be heroes alive or dead rather than living cowards.

Explanation - In Ancient Greece the Phalanx was the most effective battle formation and was composed of a large number of soldiers called Hoplites who were armed with long spears & shields and wore leather or bronze armoured breastplates, greaves (leg guards) & helmets. The formation advanced to war as tightly knit block of troops and they were effective because the soldiers weren't fighting alone, they fought as a unit and relied on their comrades. They had to stay as a block because their shield covered their left flank, and the right flank of the soldier to their left. If they broke ranks they would be exposed to attack, the Phalanx would crumble and they would all die. There was therefore an incentive to stay as a unit. If a Hoplite ran from battle he would drop his shield as it was his biggest encumbrance, whereas if he fought honourably he would either come home carrying his shield, or if he was kileld or wounded his comrades would carry him back on his shield.

The Journey is not hard it only looks hard because the human mind fears the rivers and avoids the mountains.

"If i can stop ones heart from breaking,
I shall not live in vain
If I can ease one life the aching,
Or cool one pain,
Or help one fainting robin unto his nest again,
I shall not live in vain
