I've noticed in the last few years that it is becoming common to spell achilds name differently to the normal spelling, for example Allayne instead of Elaine. I know some people think it makes the child noticed, but do they realise that they will have to go through life correcting people every time they give their name? What a pain for them.

I spent the first 27 years of my life with a difficult surname to spell, and was forever correcting people or having to spell it out. It was also a surname that was famous, so people also asked if I was related to........
Now I am married I have one of the easiest surnames out. One that cannot be misheard or spelt differently, and easy to spell. WILLIAMS. In 6 years I have only had to spell it once.
Because of this I made sure that my kids had names that were also easy to spell. Daniel and Holly.

I agree with you. I think it is silly. People do it to be different and unique. They think it makes a statement. It really doesn't other than "Hey,look at me I'm trying to be different and unique." A name does not predestine a child for anything. It is just a name and I believe in giving strong names...not goofy ones.
Our boys are Joseph, Michael and Samuel. It is funny because they are your regular, all American names and yet they are the exception in their peer groups. You rarely hear any children of their ages with those names. So, who are the unique ones now?

My name is Cristina, not spelt like that to be awkward, but because I am Spanish. Everyone spells my name wrong and I have to go through life correcting people all the time. It's not because my name is spelt 'wrong' it's because they make assumptions. A name is a personal thing given to you and it doesn't have a 'correct' spelling.

Dont worry the derivitive will disappear as quick as it arrived. Only the mainstay names really last. I laugh when I see one. I think there are 12 different ways now to spell Orla, how difficult could it be. What makes me laugh harder is people with a traditional name who pronounce it differently, like Colin Powell. What's that about ?

some names just look ugly when written, Elaine is one of those, almost as bad as edna or erma ugh
i have a plain name myself, i'm guessing my parents were too daft to think of a real name so i have a month, i still correct people on the spelling and it's spelled like the month

I know what you mean, my brothers name is Craig but it is spelt in a VERY different way
(not coz my mum couldn't spell it but because she wanted to spell it in a Greek or Arabian way, something like that)
and has been correcting people for the past 23 years.
Its very annoying!!

Then again, even the simplist names get mispronounced. Anna gets pronounced different ways and I have to correct people. As long as the name isn't something totally off the wall, I don't see a problem in it.

Well, my name's Isobelle instead of Isabelle.
But I like it that way. It's not like I spelled it Izzohbell, you know?
My friend's name's Monikah. Not Monica.
Anyway - I guess I like unique spellings sometimes, but not all the time.
