My dad was deployed on a lot of holidays when I was growing up. My mom invited soldiers over whose family was in the States or somewhere else. Thanksgiving isn't just about family its about being with friends too, so she just made sure that if anyone didn't have a place to go they were at our house!

My husband is in the Army, he's home this year but not last. When he is deployed, I invite over other families whose daddy/husband is gone. That way we can all celebrate and spend time together. When they are home, we invite over some of the single soldiers who can't afford to fly home for the holidays. It breaks my heart to think of those guys eating Thanksgiving dinner at the chow hall!

you need to invite them over for the holidays. I served the soldiers stationed around us since they are all single and they can't get home for the holidays. So you need to remember that the family need support AL so. You can spend a little time with them and it will be something to remember.

I chatted with my sister, who's daughter is deployed. When I was in the service I used to cook for the folks that couldn't get home for the holiday.

Please do anything you can to be a good friend on such an occasion. I spent many holidays away from family while in the service. I am currently overseas in Germany, and today was 'just another day', while my thoughts are at home. Say hello, invite them over, do anything you can to brighten their day during this rough time.
